The problem is that the screen is so low resolution, so anything that was ported from Master System has the original graphics but you barely have any room to see what's in front of you.
Sonic 2 is a pretty relaxed platformer on the Master System, the Game Gear port is absurdly difficult.

I haven't tried, but you can probably play anything with a composite connection on it. Atleast every 240p console.
