Why would you even want to use a card like this in your deck instead of just putting in strong monsters of your own? Your opponent might use monsters that have weak original attack but strong effects to make up for it. And if that card is buffed in any way by a spell card or its own effect copycat would be weaker since it only copies original attack.

The manga and pre battle city is super inconsistent because the creator literally wanted to make MTG the shonen but with his own "creative" twists. Also, card effects are actually much clearer than the old clusterfucks that they used to be.
Finally, I like it this way because of all the interesting ways a casual duel could go. Rather than "I summon 2500 beater, Make you discard two cards, destroy your spells and traps and i'll draw two more cards. I win", it could go "I summon 1400 Atk dude, activate my trap to bring out my other 1600 atk dude, overlay them for a rank 4, equip this card and now he's 3700" "oh yeah? I activate this spell...." you get my point

No. I'm bitching because four years ago I went to a small local tournament with a deck built of cards I liked that I thought were fun only to have my shit pushed in by two consecutive 10 year olds whose mommies spent hundreds of dollars on fucking cards. So they had these little asswagons had fucking bullshit meta decks that would field their sttongest asswrecker in two to three turns without fail. So my deck made of cards I liked and assembled over five years was fucking useless because of some little fucknuggets whose parents blew a months pay at $12 an hour to make sure little Timmy couldn't lose.
That day the fun evaporated and I haven't touched a trading card game since then.

My deck was far from weak. I had it built so that only one card (my Creator) had over four stars. Then I had a fuckton of equip buffs and traps to keep the opponents field as empty as possible on top of a handful of monsters whose effects also buffed my attack strength. Plus I had two Creator Incarnates to speed up the Creator summon.
Both assnuggets had a deck where sending their weakest monsters to the graveyard caused a cascade that resulted in their ultimate assfucker being special summoned in two to three turns. So my patchwork deck, no matter what my strategy, was fucked because it didn't have cards designed to counter the specific effe ts of his monsters and magic cards.
It was bullshit.
