Yeah the bug system is completely overworked and improved. The bug levels up seperately from the weapon.. and the introduction of hunter arts is significant. There is a pretty easy to get hunter art that shoots out your bug and it retrieves rainbow essence no matter what it hits (grants you all 3 colors)

Basically each weapon can use multiple attack styles, it changes your moveset slightly and gives you benefits
Guild style = original, what you're used to
Aerial = your roll turns into a horrible as fuck slow as fuck roll, but if you collide into anything (bombs, monster, friendlies) it will launch you and you do reduced mount damage. Gimmicky but fun to spam mounts and such.
Bushido = if you roll into an attack you get an extended dash in whatever direction you were rolling, it makes being immune and dodging through attacks easy as fuck, it also gives you a follow up attack out of dash
Hunter style = you get access to 3 hunter arts instead of just 1 or 2.. and a worse moveset. one of the more boring ones

Not really, the mount damage it deals is significantly less, it's super gimmicky -- you will see your clear times are slower with aerial than any other style, but if you are in a group and care about utility it can be useful

Having played MH:X it felt about as easy as any other one honestly. The game has received more polish -- it feels pretty similar to mh4u and it's still fun as fuck. mh3/mh4 in general weren't too bad, but neither are the older ones if I go back to them now with 2000 hrs of experience in the series.
Aerial is one of those things that seems super OP but you will really really be disappointed by the damage you deal if all you go for is aerial attacks. Took me maybe double the clear time on solo DB with constant mounts.
Keep in mind MH:X has no G rank which sucks but also means you don't have a lot of armor skills

Yeah it felt like the weakest of the stances, which is disappointing.. I remember thinking holy fuck. I mained IG in 3u so I was like this is clearly my jam, but I felt it was weak in comparison to bushido.
You have to keep in mind your roll is pretty much gone -- I don't even think the aerial stance roll has any i-frames and it's almost 1/2 as slow and takes you 1/2 as far. It's garbage if anything is coming at you and your weapon is drawn. You do an awkward, retarded hop up to the sky

It's the best choice for S&S, though, as you only lose the shitty backjump attack, but you get to use all the baller as fuck S&S hunter arts.
You get to shoryuken, invincible spin, and swing your sword around like a jackass. It's really wonderful because it gives the weapon lots of things to do in hunts other than just one combo over and over.

Start with 3U on the Wii U. It's got the best controls and atmosphere in the whole franchise; it's the most likely to get you hooked. There is the hit-or-miss water battles, but I personally thought they were really well done, especially from a world building perspective.
4U, while still really good, does force you to play on the 3DS, isn't as aesthetically pleasing, and is a bit on the easy side, especially against fights against the Elder Dragons that are supposed to be this powerful, near unstoppable forces. I still recommend it to see the new mechanics and some more monster variety, but don't let it be your entry to the series.
Haven't played Generations yet, can't judge there.

The only thing I'll agree with you on is the grind for new gear. At least in LR they give you a little protection. But you might as well be wearing paper armor in your first few HR quests, ESPECIALLY if you're a gunner. Ho-lee shit.
What I recommend doing is finding a Velocidrome guild quest and farming that for armor parts. Velocidromes are easy enough to kill, and the armor you get is decent.

Tri was great, P3rd filled it with the extra content it needed, 3U was just P3rd + Tri but needed you to shell out cash on a new gen system for it and therefore a disappointment.
4U is good, but the 3DS controls are awful as expected and vertical combat was a mistake.

The thing that would kill MH5 is if they just kept with gen 1 and 2 monsters. They barely added any Gen 4 because of that. And none of them aged well when you compare gen 3 and 4 to 1 and 2.
