I played MW3 and MA for ages but literally never knew there were ones after that because I was like 7 and 11 when MW4 and MA2 came out apparently.
MW2 Mercenaries, easily. It expanded on just about everything that made MW2 good with more weapons and more mechs, had a great management simulator mode if you wanted it, and easily had the coolest missions in the series (most of which were entirely optional since the game was semi non-linear).

It just wasn't good. Felt like it was made by people with no clear goal or design in mind. Controls were shitty, customization and choice of mechs was severely downgraded.

The atmosphere of MW3 just couldn't be matched by the other games. The voice acting, campaign, presentation, controls, all realistic enough to make you feel immersed in the BTech universe.

I fucking love 4Mercs. It's the most complete MW game and has an incredibly fun campaign. The mixture of RPG and action that I like is perfect.
Also pretty challenging on later difficulties. Ironman Mode is where is at.
Say what you will about MWO, but without it we probably would never gotten the unseen again and not nearly as many

You can get MW4M for free with the MekPak3 mod which adds like 300 robots (and battle armor) and updates the graphics a little bit. Unfortunately it doesn't include the HD mod which was going around about a decade ago.
