Back in the day we used to have [sound threads], where embedded files in pictures could be viewed by in browser extensions, in particular this was mostly music files.
One day in one of those threads that image was posted, with an embedded file (notice the large filesize) but when anyone clicked the [play] on the sound extension nothing happened. Everyone just thought it was a dud or something, but later one anon reported that after doing it they had found that by combination of embedded code, and the browser extension, a "Screamer" had been set up to play a loud startling noise randomly when the user was using the computer.
Most people at that time didn't have the extension, so they thought when people said "don't open that file it puts a screamer on your computer" they thought that somehow the image was going to give them a virus like a creepypasta, instead of realizing you had to extract the embedded code in a very specific way to get it to happen.
