I grew up with Baldur's Gate and Myth. I don't know the first thing about Elder Scrolls (other than people telling me that I should start in release order) and I know even less about how well the series has progressed into the mainstream market.
It's a plugin platform. There is nothing to do in the game itself. Everything is bland, boring and generic, maybe save for visuals (but they get old too). No challenge, no writing, no interesting gameplay mechanics, no quality combat, no quest variety, no itemisation, like what the fuck I'm even supposed to do in this game, walk around and jerk off to snow mountains? Looks like devs don't even know themselves.
it's a step up from oblivion but it's still shit. All they care about is getting the crowd and they do because of brand, PR and sheer amount of money poured into this shitheap. I wish they'd stop making 100 km^2 wastes and start actually making games, they did it a couple of times and it turned alright.
The only good game Bethesda ever made was Morrowind. DF, too, if it weren't so goddamn buggy or had such godawful level design.

Skyrim added smithing and really buffed up the housing system though. And making things like fish and butterflies collectable the way that plants have been is also a great change. And the combat, while not exactly good, has been gradually improving.
