Almost anything, at lowered settings obviously.
I got this few years old laptop with mere i3 @ 2.1ghz, 6GB DDR3 and GT 540M 1GB, and it can run even some fairly modern games, like MGS5 and KF2, at 720p, Low, at 30fps (locked).
Anything pre-2012 runs just about flawlessly, such as the STALKER trilogy on DX9 lightning mode + mods. Emulators are good thing to have as well.
Just always make sure the games start with the Nvidia GPU! The "Optimus" system sometimes fucks up and thinks it can run some titles on the HD Graphics 3000.

Not to significant degree, really. Anything below GTX 550M is already non-gaming card anyway. Also that i7 really helps in his case, and the HD 3000 chip is also surprisingly capable, as seen here on STALKER, running DX8 lightning mode at 80fps average, other settings on high.
According to some YT benchmarks, 520M can get around 25-30fps on GTA5, 720p and low settings.

Really depends on which GT 520M he got, if it's a 96:16:4 then he should just overclock it a ton
