I think the ending would have been better if Dr. Robotman instead of being all "I HATE humans, so Im going to secretly breed them with robots and make them STRONGER! That'll teach 'em! Then restart and/or learn trigger disclipine. I found the teammate AI fucking stupid sometimes, and even worse I'd shoot someone who is on my shoulders, just because their half-visible body is lined up with my reticle. I just left my team alone and starting going gung-ho, even on survivor (hard) the game is mostly easy aside from a couple of boss encounters that have too many scripted events.

Best you can do is be aware on their general vicinity and try to direct them to holding back or giving cover fire.
Alternatively and what got me the best ending with Cain coming back was being Rambo. Your teammates love you for being the risk taker and being super aggressive. The time's I held back for whatever reason and they rip on me on not contributing all that much even when I was near dead.
