You'd be deluded or ignorant of the game to say that the PPSH wouldn't have been the better choice. There are times where the MP40 shines, maps that have a lot of cover but also a lot of 40-50m vantage points like Cold Steel. The greater controllability of the MP40 gives you an edge at medium range over the Soviet SMGs. In trench or room-to-room fighting the PPSH is always the best choice among the SMGs.

You have to make a distinction between rhetoric and policy. Yes, anti-imperialism has always been a vital part of the worldview of marxist political parties, the Soviets included, however once power had been consolidated were not above starting fights for reasons unrealistically attached to any kind of liberatory politics. You also have to remember that Stalin brought back Russification and the kind of ethnic chauvinism that many peoples in the Russian Empire (including a certain Georgian) found so detestable.
And another thing: Western working classes and their organization took a sharp turn against socialism and the USSR, because in the post-war they were reaping all the benefits of the Keynesian economic model, as well as a healthy dose of red-scare tactics and propaganda.

The Soviets, in a fucked up kind of way, did go about establishing new socialist states in occupied Europe.
