I don't know anyone else who's downloaded it, so I don't have any to interact with.

People vastly underestimate how big tying MyNintendo into the mobile scene is going to be for them.
Keep in mind, checking in with the service every day will get you free points that you can spend on whatever, whether it's Wii U software, mobile junk, DLC... whatever.
