I not too sure what you would consider the core gameplay but every time I've tried to get back in to the game I could make it past the combat, mobs, magic system, lycrthropy and cave spelunking. Mods can fix those things, but the main quests, and especially the ones that rail road you through the dragonborn shit is what really turns me away. The other thing is the fact that skyrim itself feels so fucking small, I don' t need more than one or two characters to experience the whole fucking thing.
I just end up going back to playing dworf fort adventure mode.

I guess it was just the whole rail roading main story quests and how you'd always run into the talking dog, or the the thiefs guild guy asking you to join his secret club. Those mods that let you skip those quests specifically were great but most of the quests just seem to play out like that, so I'd visit a town and have to end up ignoring 50% of the NPC's because I already know where they'd lead me. I just end up looking for caves or ruins I never finished before, which is probably how most of /v/ play the game out on a new run. Those really lengthy dwemer ruins were always fun.

I think it was because I played it originally on the ps3 and fell in love with it then. I definitely agree it's improved tenfold by mods. I think it may just be my nostalgia goggles that made me say that.

And no, sticking in one of the three main combat overhauls isn't good enough.
Not to mention most people don't have the patience, foresight or perception to on the fly balance the game, which naturally it needs as you progress.

Maybe there are new versions, I don't know, haven't played Skyrim in a year. But I've been modding it since day one, just like every TES since Morrowind, and I posted this to show the OP what are some good mods. People don't realise what can be done in Skyrim, they assume it's just some futa shit and horse cocks. You can turn your game into a better Thief if you're into sneak for exemple.
I didn't say use THESE mods and nothing else, but this gives him an idea of what mods to look for.
Basically tons of armors/weapons, spells that make dragon's dogma look pathetic, new gameplay, 4k-8k textures on everything, new AI, everything is improved.

Perkus Maximus is amazing if you run the patcher properly and don't fuck up, otherwise use Skyrim Redone, it's by the same guy. Frostfall is fun and you can also add hypotermia for even more hardcore.

just use mod profiles and go crazy with it. make one profile that has all your 8k fotoreel textures and enb for screenshot porn, make one that drastically changes the skills/spells/etc, make one for all your dickgirl rape mods, and so on.
modding is idiot proof nowadays and you essentially just maintain a 'library' of mods and use profiles to pick and choose which ones you wanna turn on. you dont wanna enable like 3 mods that change combat at the same time for obvious reasons.
there are some though that a re 'universal' like the unofficial patches that you want enabled no matter what.

That's very true, and it's also why I find the lack of good quest mods so frustrating. Gameplay improvements don't mean much when I'm still going through the same dungeons/quests I've already done several times over, and that often weren't that interesting the first time I played them.
