The original Paper Mario's advertising is kind of neat in retrospect.
In Japan, it was just called "Mario Story" and the paper concept was clearly an angle invented during localization as a sort of meta-justification for the flat sprite+3D model aesthetic.
It clearly worked, though, seeing as they rolled it into the series proper with the sequel (literally named "Paper Mario RPG" overseas), with all of the paper gags and powers.They've gone way too far with it with the last couple of games though, it's getting really obnoxious now how much focus "Paper" gets over "Story/RPG".
