AAA game developers are creatively bankrupt as far as gameplay innovation/perfection goes, so everyone's playing an FPS whose entire gameplay system and structure is based upon the movement and recoil of Half Life 1, from 1998.
The entire gameplay system feels wrong given the advances of graphical and physics technology, fucking anachronistic.

It's not as great as Quake in terms of skill based, but it's still one of the highest skill ceiling games on the market with around fifteen years of community growth for the franchise. Upgraded graphics is a real game seller, and yes, marketplace items that you can buy and sell for real money which look nice ingame is a big seller as well. You dismiss these but it factors in easily to make it a popular game. Also the KillCam thing is not in Competitive, which is the real reason everyone plays CSGO, not Casual.
Take it from someone who ranks up and sells Global Elites for free money, it's popular for many reasons over Source and 1.6

Silver is insanely easy to get now that it starts you off at silver one instead of GN3 like it did before the update. Just lose 4, win 9, lose 3, Win 1, S1-3 formula. Also GE goes for 35-75$ now, since the percentages are so tiny.

SSG is only accurate while standing in one place and jumping. Half-Life has randomized conefire and literally flying around at 3x CS:GO's max speed doesn't effect spray. High end HLDM is just people flying around backwards with the Tau Cannon sniping eachother.

The compression they did to ranks also resulted in a load of people with wildly different skill levels being squished in around the middle ranks, match-ups have been absolute garbage in those ranks since it hit and it only drops off around Eagle.
