He basically explains what went right in the early days, before it all went wrong, with Viacom's management and adblock being the ones responsible. Even though he made some big gaffs when it came to review scores, it's pretty clear Shane had a great understanding of the gaming audience on the internet and knew exactly how to run a site.

I know people don't like the guy for his opinions on games, but when it comes to running a site, he's really damn good. When he was running Gametrailers, he made sure all the content they made was about the games and the games only, not "personalities" talking about games. This made for some of the best game related content on the internet like their retrospectives, and even if you didn't agree with the reviews, they were the most professionally written and edited by far.

Ad-based profit models aren't sustainable. There's a limit to enterprise opportunities in the digital market much like is the case in the material world.

they are somewhat. its just hard to pay people full time with ad rev. Most podcasts that have ads just read off copy at the start of the show. 2-5 min at the most of ads and then the show starts.
