Most of the DLC bullshit is cosmetics that nobody cares about. If redditors want to shovel money at unit graphics packs that's no skin off my back.
The rest of the DLC is major expansions, which they give you most of for free, and you only have to pay for like 10% of the features if you really don't want to wait for a sale.

I've never cared for the historical games much but love civilization and galciv 2.
Looks like the best blend of EU/CK/galciv.

Apparently the AI is worse than GC2, everything is clunky as fuck and you constantly have to enter/exit menus to compare stats and so forth that you wouldn't have to do in GC2. AI sidelines you into following a single strategy or you almost always lose. Riddled with DLC despite major issues like memory leaks going unfixed for years. It's shiny, but GC2 is more enjoyable to play.

Development alone added so much more depth to the game, then Horde mechanics makes each horde a viable option now you can loot provinces with high development for monarch mana. IF you do a full game with just each of the big three hordes you're looking at 120+ hours alone.

The symmetrical starts are for the "regular" player/AI empires. The fallen and pre-warp civilizations have different starting levels.
