Singleplayer videogames are not games, they're puzzles if anything

The idea of a "game" was designed with multiple people in mind, some kind of competition. Singleplayer words are more like the equivalent of a quiz or crossword puzzle

I wasn't implying there's anything wrong with puzzles, they're just not games

well done

is discus a puzzle OP
or is it a game
>>
>>330967523
If it involves competition it is a game. Otherwise you're just throwing an object around
>>

What if you're competing against your best time?

Christ, OP.

The AI is still a player
>>
>>330967016
The computer can perform actions, the computer has a preference for you losing so it has preference over action profiles, fits the definition of a game
>>
>>330968863
It's not, its artificial. It's designed a certain way during development, like how a puzzle is set up during development

well you could consider an AI as another person
think of a fighting game or sports game, with tough AI is there really musc of a difference playing the AI or a human player other than the patterns of playstyles

>>
>>330969205

Movies aren't a activity.
>>
>>330967016
I feel the same way. I have a childlike mentality toward single player games: looking for a sense of wonder and a different world. Which exists until you see through the veil and understandthe mechanisms in place that produce the illusion. Then it becomes tedium to complete the "puzzle". rng elements and open world sandbox stuff can maintain the illusion a bit longer. Eventually though things tilt in favour of the player and you go through the motions.
Speed running and such is a way to lengthen enjoyment for some but ive neve had the drive to want to improve at something thats immediately and obvIiously pointless and extremely self contained (real life goals at least have health, social or financial benefits).

Leaves multiplayer games for me. But then of course theres the frustration of team cohesion if you dont have friends as invested in the games as you and have to use matchmaking.

I think games arent for me no more

Etymology

From Middle English game, gamen, gammen, from Old English gamen (“sport, joy, mirth, pastime, game, amusement, pleasure”), from Proto-Germanic *gamaną (“amusement, pleasure, game", literally "participation, communion, people together”), from *ga- (collective prefix) + *mann- (“man”), equivalent to ge- + man; or alternatively from *ga- + a root from Proto-Indo-European *men- (“to think, have in mind”), equivalent to ge- + mind. Cognate with Middle High German gamen (“joy, amusement, fun, pleasure”), Swedish gamman (“mirth, rejoicing, merriment”), Icelandic gaman (“fun”). Related to gammon, gamble.

There's not a single mention that more than one person must participate, not to mention that puzzle is also game, there's nothing to discuss, you're just a faggot who thinks that having a thread on /v/ means something.

>>330969494
I can see the goal. I understand the actions required to achieve it. Therell be no revelation upon completion. Games lack the depth of real life and most of those with great depth are just a bunch of spreadsheets.

Theres a certain spectrum of emotional and physical enjoyment or growth that games can provide and i find it fairly shallow.

Puzzles are a kind of game, so your idea is dead on arrival.

I do consider some 'games' to be more like 'toys' though (not that this applies to all single-player games).
>>
>>330969317
This is a really bad comment.

To watch something you are becoming involved with it. To watch something, you are engaging with it. If you go to the cinema, you are participating in an acticity, the activity is going to the cinema to watch a movie.

We all know watching a movie is not a game, so you didn't answer his question.
>>
>>330970158
What makes a "game" a "game" then? Why defines it as being a game.

Is Firewatch a game?

did you act in the movie?
did you in any way contribute in the movie other than paying to WATCH the movie?

do you have an argument that wasn't btfo by the very first generation of video games?

>>330971265
Yeah, the game there is the actual competing for the high scores.

>>330971373
Ah, yeah, you're right. I totally forgot the game wasn't actually called Pac-Man, it was really called "Put ASS in the Name Column."

Must there always be a goal? Or some kind of chance for growth? Is it not enough to enjoy the playing of a game? i.e. "It's the journey not the goal"

Words change meaning over time. Even if the dictionary definition supported your argument (which it fucking doesn't gg), the English dictionary isn't prescriptive. It doesn't exist to dictate how people should use words. It's descriptive. It's a record of how people use a word.

There's a societal consensus on the word game that defines what the word means, and Solitaire is considered a game.
>>
>>330970185
You are not engaging with it. It is engaging with you. It's a one way street.
>>

a puzzle has to test your critical thinking skill in order to be a puzzle, and it must be pursued to completion. but there are video games in which you are guided on a linear path, and opposite types of games where you are required to do absolutely nothing and explore to your heart's content.
>>
>>330973109
It's a competition with their past selves.
I don't know why I'm arguing. You can argue semantics all day, but all that ultimately matters is how everyone else uses the word. Words exist to convey meaning, and if someone says "I'm gonna go play a game" you know what the fuck they mean you anal cunt. Words stop working if they don't mean to you what they mean to other people
>>
>>330967016
I spent a lot of time as a kid sitting alone in my sandbox building random shit, or throwing a ball against a wall, or other single player games
So no
