It's supposed to be metaphorical and artistic. You know how Earthbound's final boss was a reflection of the director's traumatizing memory of seeing child birth? Nomura actually had a ton of imagination with cartoony space ships as a child, which is why Kingdom Hearts had those gummi ship sections that felt tacked on. His favorite boss designs tended to be a big, flying mass. His personal favorites included Ruler of the Sky (giant bird in Neverland in 385/2 Days) and the dragon section vs Xemnas in Kingdom Hearts 2
