It's the Disc Read Error screen.
Pray that ejecting it and putting it back fixes it, or it means something worse happened.

That said, you really didn't get this from the problem that caused a class action lawsuit.
>>
>>330841559
Ahhh I see

So people were scared because it could mean a busted disk. I thought people were scared of the red screen itself for being scary.
>>
>>330841919
>So people were scared because it could mean a busted disk

Probably more afraid of the disc drive going bad, but like I said, the big problem that caused that for a lot of people typically didn't get you this screen.
>>
>>330842150
If that's so why were so many people scared of this in particular
>>
>>330841186
That RPG you sunk so much hours into..... could POSSIBLY NOT WORK.
>>
>>330842737
This. And when this screen suddenly pops up, and it's the middle of the night, and those atmospheric sound effects are playing. It's kind of you staring into the abyss and the abyss staring back into you~type shit. Or, that was my experience, anyway.
>>
>>330841186
The red mist and creepy noise scared the fuck out of me at 10. Still gives me chills now

For me, since I worked selling pirate game discs and ps2 chips for people that didn't have a fucking clue how to mod their console to play pirated games, it was synonym with a drive that was dead.
Another common symptom was the drive not reading DVDs anymore and only CDs.
>>
>>330842737
thats why they had memory cards...
>>
>>330844251
No words can describe my reaction to your stupid post.

You have my condolences.
>tfw never could afford a ps2 of my own and now it is far too late
>>
>>330844347
why? am i remembering incorrectly or did the ps2 totally have memory cards?
>>
>>330844770
forget the saved game, I might have to save my fucking dinner money again for 6 weeks so I can buy a new copy
>>
2spooky

When you have no idea how video games work, games not doing exactly what you expect can be scary.
>>
>>330844770
The problem wasn't your save data.
The problem with a disc or even worse, a drive error which means your ps2 is busted and you are completely fucked, dumb nigga.

Rent the same game that's giving you errors from blockbuster. Return your ruined copy to blockbuster.

New copy for $3.99. I was a 12 year old genius
>>
>>330844684
Just emulate it. The specs required are pretty easy to meet these days
>>

Never was scared of this, I don't understand how it scared people
>>
>>330841919
The noise it made was kind of spooky

Sadly, one of the games I really want to play is in the intro only section of the pcsx2.
It is some obscure game called gadget racers, pic related.

Speakin personally,

It can bee eerie and off putting to see this kind of thing. These screens have a fairly authoritarian tone and an unsettling mood. (usually by sounds that it plays or lack of) It can also be a bit spooky because this straightforward and machine like message is usually irregular considering the leisurely nature of most games.

To me it's kind of like why game related creepy pastas can creep people out. It's a program acting like it's not supposed to, or at least, acting in a way you aren't used to. That, or you're just plain irritated that your shit don't work
>>
>>330845851
This looks familiar. Was this an open world game where you drove around and had to challenge other cars to races?
>>
>>330846613
Exactly.
It is a racing rpg game.
I loved the ones in gba, and I also tried choro q and road trip.
I haven't had time to play them more, I have been busy with other games but I will get to it.

It was suspenseful as fuck waiting to see if the new PS2 game I hired for a week worked on my PS2 which I did not take care of, not to mention the PS2 startup screen also took like 5 seconds to load up, I got to the point where I instantly restart the PS2 if the pink light gets to a specific area.
>>
There is something unnerving about the PS2 starting screen, especially late at night home alone
>>
>>330841186
Yeah, it creeped the fuck out of me honestly.

The ambient music was fucking spooky.
>>
>>330847036
Xbox HUEG sounds are far more unnerving.
I got used to them though.
It is one of those things that you learn to live with and don't think about too much.
>>
>>330841919

It's both, that screen has the biggest "something bad is happening" vibe.
>>
>>330846889
Nvm. Game I was thinking of looked much more shitty.
>>
>>330845485
Blockbuster had the checkout scan thing glued onto the disc with a circular sticker that was half impossible to peel. If you didn't return the correct disc your parents would've eaten late charges, or a full MSRP charge. Not to mention that Blockbuster discs were terrible used crap, and more likely to fail than stuff you owned...
>>
Error messages in general are kinda eerie. I remember playing melee one day late at night and the disk error showed up and something about the sound just cutting out and seeing white text on screen was spooky
>>
>>330841186
It was in many ways.

Because you'd expect the game to work but then you get this screen with its spooky ass ambiance. And the fact that the system's laser was on it's way out.

Same with the GameCube.
>>
>>330847215
>>330847036
PS2, Xbox and Gamecube screens were all kinda spooky
What the hell was up with that gen
>>
>>330847348
Maybe it was choro q?
It is understandable it was more shitty, since it is the first one.

That's not what your mom said when I let her be player 2 and she kept fucking up almost as if she was doing it intentionally.
>>
>>330847548
Btw, what is the error that gamecubes give when disc reading fails?
I haven't seen one failing yet.
>>
Usually you just put the game in and it works. You didn't need to re-insert cartridges like before. So when the machine responded the wrong way it was startling.
>>
>>330841186
The fucking sound it makes is spoopy as fuck, especially late at night when you're all alone and not expecting it

for me is cuz i usually played in the dead of night and you expected a game to work, and when it doesnt work and plays a strangely eerie sound and flashes red to the point it turns your room red then yeah

14 year old me playing manhunt and remembing that shit and warriors is a blast though.

"Everyone is scared" doesn't always mean literally everyone is being legit, clenched-ass terrified. Some people always tend to exaggerate things on the internet because, for them, it is much easier to understand others that way and that it is much more fun. But not everyone on the internet does this, OP.

P.S. Don't take everything on the internet literally/seriously (inb4 greenarrowhurrdisapplies2ut2). Also, you are so stupid, you actually made me reply.

P.S.S I'm grinding my teeth while I type this because you are such a huge dunce motherfucker my man holy shit

That is all

I don't use consoles of this gen though.
I prefer my pc.
I feel much safer in a pc for some reason, and you can multitask on them.
I got a 360, but it is not modded and I don't have much money these days to by orginal games, so I haven't touched it much apart form playing geometry wars, which I bought before getting a 750 ti for my toaster.

It is safer by a wide margin. Anything goes wrong, you get to replace the whole thing. Then, you get to buy a transfer cable to get your saves out. Then you get to update your new console, redownload your profile, your DLCs and your licenses for those DLCs. I miss the days when my PS2 would fail.
>>
>>330849493

God damn you, Shenmue II.
>>
>>330847796
My memory might be fuzzy, but instead of doing the intro jingle with the block, the Gamecube logo appears and then spins in to the console menu screen.

THE REAL SCARIEST ONE WAS THE GAMEBOY PLAYER SOUND WHEN YOU EJECTED THE CART IN A GAME
