The Wii Remote was a standard controller. That's one of the best things about it. It was ingeniously designed.
The Wii U is a failure because the gamepad is a return to the craziness of the Gamecube and N64 when the Wii was designed to move away from those and move back to the NES, the controller has an awful battery life, the system tries to be Gamecube 2.0 with its games, and Nintendo burned Wii fans with the final years of the Wii.
I wonder if it would be perceived differently among core gamers if the Wiimote had been released for the Gamecube for which it was originally being developed/experimented.

Gamecube's worldwide sales were more than 10 million less than N64. Granted, Xbox/Dreamcast were a stronger competitor than Saturn, but Nintendo expected to sell 50 million Gamecubes and they didn't even reach half of it.

That may be true. But let me ask you something, when you think of the N64 and gamecube, what's the first thing that comes to mind? Probably decent systems that had good games which were killed by aggressive competition and poor business decisions. Looking back now a large majority of people think back to those systems as great consoles that were severely overshadowed.
That's not the case with Wii. You mention the Wii and most people remember it as a party machine with a decent amount of good games but mostly filled with shovelware, but it sold well. That was the problem, we all know nintendo doesn't know jack shit about their audience besides the little 5 year old jap kiddies playing yokai watch on their 3ds.
Nintendo saw the success of the Wii and tried to do it again, they didn't even think that in 2-3 years time during development that the casual audience would completely shift to mobile gaming. They got greedy and tried to double dip but it came back to bite them.

N64 had more power than PS1. That's why it got many PC ports. Gamecube was fairly powerful. As for the controllers, thats debatable.
