I don't know about native but in NW theres a public RP server that works pretty well. Not too try hard MLG Regiment but people still follow their officers and form lines when told.

The lack of voice chat really hurts organization though, a NW2 needs it even if only for officers.

I wonder if that's what was actually happening with all those napoleonic wars regiments. I never did get into those.

But yeah I have high hopes for this game in the multiplayer aspect. Those warband native 'line' battles look insanely cool.

My dream is for the technology to get to the point where you can have a multiplayer game with the scale of a 1v1 Total War battle. It can never approach real life scale of course, but TW seen from the ground level is a close enough approximation. We're approaching that already with the bots, even Napoleonic Wars allowed up to 900 bots in custom games.

I mean you'd probably have to organize it like an event, where lots and lots of regiments organize into two massive teams for a one night game, but still. Would be pretty mindblowing.

I played Battlegrounds 2 (half life 2 mod) and scratched this itch around 10 years ago. It wasn't as much fun as you'd think because you're basically just praying that you don't get shot and that you hit anyone.

"Hope I don't get shot" is better if immersion or roleplay is your thing. No group of players ever made a genuine retreat when they knew they would just respawn.

But retreats happen all the time in Napoleonic Wars when things look bad, almost like in real life. This also makes last stands a bit more special, instead of just the standard thing people do.

Well shit, I never saw it that way.
The big problem with it though is how isolated those CoD matches are. You don't have 100 people guarding one big tower, you have 20 people guarding one of five towers.
If the enemy force had to take all five of those towers to win it would be really cool, but only losing one makes you lose.

That's whats cool about Napoleonic Wars. If you're on, for example the Waterloo map, the teams usually fight over 2 or 3 of the fortified farmhouses, although its all just one giant map. So while you're taking the white farm for example, the whole time you're fighting you can see in the distance the rest of your team fighting at the red fort.

If they get destroyed, then you'll have to defend white fort while being outnumbered by the enemy team. It puts you at a disadvantage because of someone elses failure, but it feels so natural that you dont care. The forts arent even objectives, you dont get points or anything like that for taking them, players just naturally gravitate toward them because theyre defensible.

But this applies to all aspects of the battle, a bad general might get your cavalry wiped out and you have to make due with no horsemen support all while being charged or harassed by enemy cavalry. A bad officer commanding a large regiment might take too long to flank when you desperately need reinforcements. etc etc. But mistakes like that happened in real life, and only adds to the immersion.
