The anime was actually based on the games. It started as a RPG series on the Game Boy, which had five in total on GB and GBC, then they took a break on mainline for a while and released a few spin-offs and remakes on GBA. Then it died off for about six years until they did a sixth game on DS, and then more mainline and spin-offs on 3DS. The 9th mainline game just came out four months ago.
Only the GBA remake of the second game was localized, along with an action spin-off for GBA made for the west, and a poor GameCube game.

GM is basically a spin-off they released two years ago, Dual, but with an all-female cast and fanservice, which honestly I don't think would be what the fanbase would want. I'd bet either you've got parents who grew up with it buying it for their kids or people who grew up with it who still want more, and neither probably wants this direction.
Dual was pretty fun though as a game. Only issue I had was it ran like shit and GM I would bet runs better on N3DS.

Unlike a demo, releasing a beta gives them plausable deniability on any of the game's shortcommings. Since you know, "It's just a beta!" As long as the game is functional and looks pretty people will assume the final product will have a huge amount of content and all the flaws will be fixed like with the Dark Zone
