What was the purpose of runes?
Pregame customization to accent champion choice and bans, similar to what summoner spells do. It allows for specialization based on what the enemy team chooses.
They also double as an incentive to spend money on the game for IP boosts and whatnot. Cause jews.

how's league nowadays? I quit about 2 years ago and I was thinking about coming back.
It really can't be about significant customization though because at least half of all the tier 3 runes are useless. The meta is always flat ad/atk speed, regen/flat armor, CDR reduc/mr and whatever else you were missing or want to just inflate with your quints
I just really hate how I have to play over 300 games just to get into ranked and use my IP so efficiently and skimp out on champs you want just so I can be prepared with 3 filled rune pages. And the fact that you can't customize rune pages like mastery pages in Champ select is cancer

Implying you will have enough IP unless you God tier a large amount of your games before level 30 to have the full rune pages and the champs you want without buying the champs.
Im level 25 now and I'm quite short of the 16 champs I need for ranked (only have 12) and don't even have a full tier rune page let alone 2 or 3. And the most expensive Champ I bought with IP was jarvan

Meybe they used to have some kind of relevancy but nowdays they are just a bit of stat boost at the beggining of the game. I've been using the same 2 rune pages for 4 years and nothing ever changed much.
I really expect Riot to remove/rework them sometime.And if they remove them they won't return IP
