I honestly don't understand the love for JRPGs. Everyone says how great the stories are when they're literally the same anime shit over again and the gameplay is a mixture of menu simulator, elemental rock-paper-scissors, and cycling through attack, potion, and the occasional antidote.
>>
There is no story in Souls games or any Japanese game, they just mask simplistic content with grandiose (to them) phrasings.

>Behold the glyph of Asperger for it foretells the eclipse of your archetype

Seriosly, they even call their games with nonsensical names like Nier Gestalt when it's just skinner box grinding simulator.

Ooh, gestalt.
>>
>>330697596
>grandiose (to them)
pretty much. Asians can't into art and stories because they don't have anything similar to western enlightenment, thanks in part judeo-christian religion and the renaissance. Their Confucius and Mao doctrines only allow for them to be good at more technical things, which is why they're so good at math.

I've never liked Final Fantasies. It's lot like reading the newspapers. You know how to turn the pages, but you have no idea what they're talking about.
>>
I hope to Christ you're not implying western RPGs tell good stories either.

Here's the sad truth: All video game stories are stupid bullshit.

You might be autistic, as the ability to understand different viewpoints is something you learn with 10 fucking years.

JRPG just means RPG from Japan, it's not a specific type of RPG.

CRPG, ARPG, SRPG, etc, those are specific types of RPG, and any of those from Japan are JRPGs.

So what games do you play

tell me so I can break the genre down into a simplistic analysis and tell you how shitty it is like a pessimistic little cunt

JRPG is a genre. Usually is story-driven, features a menu-based combat in the style of Pokemon or Final Fantasy, features random encounters, and usually music that is regarded as pretty good

These are staples of the series, and these games differ heavily from Western RPGs. A WRPG typically features a player-created character who rolls his ability points, an open world to explore with many quests and several optional paths to complete many of the quests, an alignment system

True, many RPGs come out of Japan and don't follow the typical JRPG formula. But to say JRPG isn't a genre is ridiculous. It is a genre. When you say JRPG, everyone knows what you're talking about

Doom
SSX Tricky
Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2
Rome: Total War
Age of Mythology
Warcraft 3
Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike
>>
>>330702447
>JRPG is a genre.
No it isn't, no it fucking isn't

JRPG is just a descriptor that it's an RPG from Japan, it is not it's own genre.

ARPG is a genre, SRPG is a genre, CRPG is a genre, etc, any kind of RPG from Japan is a JRPG, period.

You just described SMT.

Where do turn-based RPGs like Pokemon and FF7 fall into that list? Strategy?

CRPG
>>
>>330702614
>JRPG is just a descriptor that it's an RPG from Japan, it is not it's own genre.

So why isn't there PRPG for RPGs from Poland or CRPG for Canadian RPG

I'll tell you why, because they don't have a unique style of their own. They get regarded as Western RPGs, as they are.

Why the double standard when it comes to Japan? Are you sure you're not just arguing for the sake of arguing? That's what it looks like.
>>
>>330702447

No, a JRPG is an RPG that was made in Japan. That's literally it.

Pokemon, Final Fantasy, Fire Emblem, Shin Megami Tensei/Persona, Mario & Luigi, etc. are all very different from each other, but they're all JRPGs.
>>
>>330703065
>Why the double standard when it comes to Japan?
people are stupid that's all
>>
>>330702796

SMT is probably what you would call a dungeon crawler, and dungeon crawlers are really more based in Western RPG

I guess you would call it something of a hybrid. The demon fusion stuff is very Japanese, but it's got some obvious western influence
>>
>>330703065

Because Poland and Canada are both western countries.

Therefore, an RPG made in those countries is a WRPG.
>>
>>330703065
Because the same fucking reason people call Japanese rock J-rock instead of just rock, even though it is just rock music from Japan.

Anything RPG from western countries are WRPGs, any RPG from Japan is a JRPG, that is how it always has been.

>>
>>330703309
all jrpgs are based on western formulas since dragon quest used wizardry and ultima as a base and all subsequent jrpgs used dragon quest as a source of inspiration so they all share western rpg formulas
>>
>>330703656

Some plot twists are good, some aren't. What's your point?
>>
I wish Japan made more action RPGs like Souls, Nier, Mass Effect, Deus Ex HR, Fable, and even Skyrim and Dragon's Dogma. 66% of my favorite games of all time are made in Japan, but I hate turn based RPGs, and most JRPG combat systems. FFXIII-2 is a really cool game, but it'd be significantly more fun if you actually fought the enemies in the world, instead of teleporting into a turn-based style arena battle with selective enemies. I'm excited for Nioh, FFXV, and Nier Automata for this reason.
>>
>>330703329

but why are you CALLING it a WRPG if that's not a genre to you?

They would just all be RPGs. There's a reason people make the distinction, and it's not just about where the game is developed. You don't see people putting the J or W tag in front of action games, or racing games, etc. It refers to specific style of a RPG, and not just to the place they made it. A JRPG could be made in the west. Child of Light and South Park: Stick of Truth are examples of this. It's a whole style of game. It's shocking that there are people on /v/ who don't even know about this

not liking JRPGs means a lot of the same things as not liking NGE's TV ending

That's why I prefer DRPGs. The combat and levelling is a lot more refined in those games and there aren't hours of cutscenes.
>>
>>330704047
Because it's an RPG from the west.

CRPG, ARPG, SRPG etc from western countries are WRPGs

CRPG, ARPG, SRPG etc from Japan are JRPGs

Heavy Rain is so fucking bad. Watching the protagonist interact with his family at the start made me feel like I was witnessing a handful of amateur dramatics club members ad lib their way through a home-life scene. It makes you wonder if David Cage has any actual experience of real world interpersonal relationships. I'm talking Tommy Wiseau levels of detachment here. I am genuinely afraid that he may have am undiagnosed case of autism. As far as I'm concerned, anybody who praises any facet of this game exposes themselves as an irredeemable pleb and the fact that it received any critical acclaim whatsoever is saddening proof of how low the bar is set for video games as a story telling medium.

I've played Future Tactics and Valkyria Chronicles. Future Tactics is fun, and I like the on-foot portions of VC, but I don't like tanks and shit. XCOM2 looks like something I'd enjoy though.
>>
>>330706831
He obviously means WRPG as in a Western-style open world-ish action RPG with character creation. No need to get so nitpicky about the semantics that you literally call people out for baiting even though you obviously know what they meant.
