Whenever Abyssea came out for FFXI.
Back when 18+ folks gathering for shit was common, not 5-8 man groups that may as well have been a local network game.
Played Project 1999 a little bit ago. Sadly, the age of the true mmorpg is dead. Companies big enough to make them got a whiff of the WoWbux and then the F2PGarbagebux.

L2 came out over a decade ago, so why the fuck do modern MMOs still employ the same shitty practice as it when the tools have evolved and graphical standards have risen?

I played OSRS last night. Slayer is a comfy skill
Been playing Nostalrius lately but there's just too many people. Has something like 14,000 people on at peak hours. Vanilla servers had about 3,000 people max, back in the day.
But back before the MMO genre morphed into the WoW/EQ-amalgamation horrorfest it is now, the last 'real' MMO I played was probably Ragnarok Online, which my friends used to affectionately call "an anime chatroom where you beat up monsters."

What level are you on Nost? You don't tend to see as many players when you reach higher levels when questing for example
Personally I love having so many people online at once, brings back memories and makes the game feel so alive. There's also the PVE server that is less croweded

It depends on how you define gameplay.
The social aspect is part of the gameplay in a game like that.
Also, I'd argue that order execution and over positioning in massive fights like in the OP is gameplay too.
I played like 4000+ plus hours of Guild Wars with no regrets.
