Why is it so bad?

Because it shares a name with the worst film in history besides Double Down.

hi doggy

It's my favorite.

It's a classic example of trying something different and failing. Happens to the best of them.

I'm in the Building World, 2nd visit and while it had some moments it just totally fails to spook me.
And I grew to utterly hate the limited inventory, it feels like I have to drop back to the apartment every ten minutes to unload all the shit I collect.
>>
>>330565742
It isn't. It's just the other 3 are so good it pales a little in comparison.
>>
I don't get the hate it gets. It's probably the last good Japanese horror game.
>>
>>330566586
It's not very good though.
>>
It committed like every possible vidya sin plaguing the market at the time. I still enjoyed it a lot though, but it could have been much better.
>>
>the second half of the game is playing the first half on reverse order, except it's an escort mission of the shittiest kind
>limited inventory
If it wasn't for those faults I would've liked it a lot more.

It's not. As far as I know, it was originally not supposed to be a Silent Hill game. That would explain the differences, the ghosts and stuff like that. I remember a lot of backtracking that I didn't like and I didn't really like those ghosts, but the whole room part was fantastic. Really felt like a predecessor to P.T. in hindsight.
>>
>>330566759
Yeah, those are my main gripes with it.
And the ghosts as well - instead of being terrifying they just make you go sigh another room of running around like a retard.
>>
HERE'S
>>
>thick atmosphere with good visuals and hit or miss character and sound design
>great soundtrack
>one of the best stories in the series
>absolute irredeemable dogshit gameplay
>backtracking as a neat idea in concept but lazy and unfun in practice
>half the noises sound like mismatched stock sounds

If they had followed the same gameplay formula as the previous three it would have come out a lot better I think.
>>
>>330566678
sure, not to the other SH games but still a good horror game in a genre that has been very lacking lately

better than the shitshow that was P.T.

I haven't played that.
But I've played Evil Within like a year ago and compared to this it was miles better.
I loved the first three Silent Hill games, beat them years ago. Never played 4 up until now.

wew indeed
>>
>>330565742
It was great, in my opinion, but alot of people hated the second half being an escort quest that back-tracked through all of the environments.

I'll admit that was a poor idea, but I still enjoyed it thoroughly.

>Evil Within
>better than SH4
no. just no.
>>
>>330567180
That's something that really appealed to me. Having a safe space where you felt isolated and could piece the story together that eventually became hostile was one of my favorite things about the game.
>>
>>330567393
It absolutely is.
>>
>>330567416
It's not used to it's full potential though.
The only actual consequence later on is that the room stops healing you. By that time you have such a stockpile of healing items that it doesn't matter anyway.
The hauntings just seem silly honestly - oh no the TV is on so spoopy.

>The famous "Oh hi doggy" line was improvised on the spot when Tommy Wiseau noticed the tiny pug dog sitting on the counter of the flower shop he was filming the scene in. Nobody else in the crew noticed the dog, as it sat perfectly still on the counter (probably because, according to the flower shop lady, the dog was really old). He took a liking to "doggy", fascinated by its quietness and cuteness.

Team Silent was never a fixed group of people. The only time it stayed really consistent was with 2 and 3 since 3 was in development almost immediately after 2 was finished. Even then they had people coming and going.
>>
>>330568605
The endless strange facts are amazing
>The character of Mark was named after Matt Damon, Tommy misheard his name despite his obsession with the actor
>Tommy Wiseau insisted on having his bare bottom filmed. "I have to show my ass or this movie won't sell"
>According to Greg Sestero, Tommy Wiseau intended for the film to contain a subplot in which Johnny was revealed to be a vampire, due to Wiseau's own fascination with the creatures. Sestero recounts how, at the outset of production, Wiseau tasked members of the crew with figuring out a way to execute a sequence in which Johnny's Mercedes Benz would lift off from the roof of the townhouse and fly across the San Francisco skyline, revealing Johnny's vampiric nature. Wiseau eventually decided to drop the subplot after learning that there was no practical way to film the flying car scene on the production's budget.

It's not.
I liked it already back in 2004, and I quite like it now.

Hell, especially now, after the western devs have raped the IP so bad, there's literally no bar to cross anymore.

The soundtrack and atmosphere are great, graphics beautiful, and the backstory quite interesting. Walter is easily one of the best MCs.

Origins is FUCKING DISASTER.
It looks like shit, plays like shit, it makes no fucking sense in any ways, and completely rapes the perfectly fine backstory of SH1, which is its biggest fucking sin.

I know fags like you will meme-arrow me to death by saying this, but go watch TP's video on the game. That's how bad it fucking is.

>eat up garbage like SH4 just because it's made in Japan
Nope. I enjoy SH4 because it has superb atmosphere, actually freaky setpieces and enemies, and it does not rape the lore of the games before it.

>TP
Confirmed for being a mindless cunt without his own opinion.
Orogins has better level design, better otherworld, better puzzles, better boss fights, better original monsters design and protagonist's backstory.
The only downside of it is that it was forced being a prequel and tied to SH1, when it was a good SH game of its own that plays more like a SH game than 4 ever will.
But sure, keep watching TP faggots and sucking on their garbage opinions :^}

Oh you Origins faggets are so pitiful.
Go suck your only semi-acceptable PSP title with forced SH2 ripoff back-story for the most pointless MC in the series.

>>330572687
none of that make it a bad game though, and it's far more enjoyable to play than Origins and the later titles.
>>
>>330572708
>after the part with the ghosts
So you gave up 30 minutes in and wrote your verdict. Did you even get past the dream sequence in SH3 before deciding it was shit, too?
>>
>>330572802
>implying SH0 is my favourite SH
But sure, like opinion of a mindless sheep who can't think for himself even matters.
Nice counter-arguments, too.
But sure, enjoy the shit game that is only half-way done. Along with them exciting escort segments.
>>
It's not. I mean, conventionally it is in that making the entire back half of the game into a backtracked escort quest is one hell of a game design sin, but at the same time if you look at SH4's positives it actually has some semblance of item management unlike the first 3 and the room itself is a GOAT horror mechanic that lends you a sense of safety until halfway through when the rug is pulled beneath your feet because fuck you, it's time to suffer. And it being a SH game, of course it has great visuals and music for the time, even if the greater sound design and enemy design is hit or miss. Either way though, SH4 has its faults but it also gets some stuff very, very right.
>>
>>330572263
>better level design

>better bossfights

>plays like a SH game
by giving you control of the otherworld transitions, while also having QTEs and the broken (lol) breaking-weapons system combined with unlimited inventory? NOPE.

tl;dr: delusional underaged fuck. Just ignore this fag!
>>
>>330572860
SH1 is my fav (and first) SH game, so yes, I played through entire SH3. it felt like an unnecessary, rushed sequel with generic locations (a mall, a subway, a sewer), and some recycled areas from SH2. the only interesting character in the game, Vincent, gets killed off in a lame way. at least SH4 has more interesting areas.
>>
>>330572802
>with forced SH2 ripoff back-story for the most pointless MC in the series.

I don't remember James having a split-personality disorded with him murdering all women who resmebled his mother who tried to kill him when he was young.
>>
>>330573376
>that shitty mirror gimmick
I guess that was a cool idea in theory but holy fuck I hated it. It killed any and all spooky by giving you total control over the Otherworld/Fog world split.

More exclamation marks, you sad autist.
>>
>>330573619
He's probably talking about how it and just about every western SH game was about a disturbed individual like SH2. Shit got real tired real quick.
>>
Origins is okay if you ignore the story. Basically a bite-sized greatest hits rendition of the original trilogy with a couple unique mechanics of its own. You know what they say, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, and though Origins apes SH1-3 as hard as it can get away with a pale imitation of greatness can still be at least decent with a little effort. Honestly, I'd say it's about on par with 4 and a little better than Shattered Memories.
>>
>>330573376
>ruins all excitement and logic of the series
Outworld's logic stopped making sense since SH3 when it spread beyond SH.
>like that totally-not-PH that can't do shit, and that generic devil you just shoot? KEK!
To be completely honest, the Butcher made sense logically because he represeted Trev's split personality of him being a serial murder, hence the half-helmet. Caliban was also very high-tier enemy design.
>by giving you control of the otherworld transitions
Fuck you, it was a neat mechanics and worked well with the puzzles.
>>
>>330565742
The same reason Devil May Cry 4 is bad.
Game forces you to replay same areas twice.
>>
>>330573887
Well, that's the SH's main gimmick
Harry is the only "non-disturbed" MC in SH games.

And yes, I'm not counting Henry, because the main source of everything in SH4 is Walter, and he's hell of disturbed.
>>
>>330574074
it's called backtracking
>>
>>330574217
>that's the SH's main gimmick
Not, it's SH2's main gimmick. The only reason Alessa and Walter's Silent Hills worked the way they did was because of explicit cult activity, which is the actual main gimmick.

SH2 wasn't great just because it was a psychological character study of a fucked up dude. That's been done too many times before for it to be successful on that alone. The thing that made SH2 great was the way it accomplished that psychological aspect and the fact that not much else had been done like that in video games. Oversaturating the series with attempts to recreate what made SH2 so good just gave us a couple of mediocre to decent games with predictable writing that failed to be engaging on the same level.
>>
>>330574783
the fuck it is.
Classic Resident Evil games had backtracking, this isn't it.
Backtracking is when you have to return to a area and do something in there in order to progress.
On those two examples the game throws you back to those areas with little to no change.
What the hell anon?
>>
>>330575090
>Backtracking is when you have to return to a area and do something in there in order to progress.
That's literally what you do in SH4, except it has linear level progression so you don't walk back to previous areas so much as the game puts you back there. The old areas in SH4 have new areas opened up where you have to find items, solve puzzles, that sort of shit. Not to say it's not total crap to play through but there are new things you have to accomplish in old areas in order to progress.
>>
Is everyone really arguing over whether that shitty game; Origins is good?
>>
>>330565742
I thought it was bad at the time but it's a 10/10 compared to the horrorshit released now.
>>
>>330574930
Wrong, SH's power is the main gimmick, not the cult.
There were mentions of shamans and shit.
Cult was just a catalyst.
>>
>>330567102
No it wasn't. It was originally just called 'The Room' until they slapped Silent Hill onto it because they thought it would sell better.

Also, it's OST is AMAZING. Definitely one of the best in the series.
