Yeah it was a complete clusterfuck. They tried to design it for consoles and PCs without sacrificing in complexity, and as a result it came out worse both ways. Later patches fixed it somewhat, but some shit you just can't patch, plus with the multiple publisher insanity that made it so certain versions of the game simply didn't work with certain versions of the expansion (I ended up buying the expansion twice because of it, fuck that garbage), it's a hot mess. At least with the gold version you get everything in one so it works the way it's supposed to and at that point it's actually a decent game if not as good as the first, but all the bullshit at launch and after it forever soured the game for me.
I'd almost argue that it would have been better if they designed it purely for consoles and then ported it to PC, but that's obviously not true considering we've got Sacred 3.

I still replay this sometimes, it's one of my favourites.
I wish there was an active online community, but when the servers got shut down everything died istantly.
