I'd normally expect people to have no strong opinions on Vaan but to me it seems that hating him is something that you really must force yourself to do. Same goes for Penelo

Some Matsunofags refuse to realize that most Matsuno's games feature a boring young boy sort of trying to get through, while everything interesting is actually done by other, usually non-playable characters. Also, supernatural stuff later crashes the party and political intrigues take a backseat.

Vaan is a very small part of the problem.
The game is extremely tedious in places, like Ogir-Yensa, Pharos, Giruvegan and that FUCKING crystal.
Just thinking of all those prevents me from starting another playthrough.

I'd say people hate him because he's forced on them despite doing so little. It's like playing FFX with Kimahri as the MC - he's not a bad character per se and has his role, but most other characters just do more and have more interesting perspectives and character arcs.

only Ashe has input throughout the entire story
people always point to Bashe or Balthier, but what the fuck did they do?
Bashe's story disappears as soon as he gets out of prison and agrees to protect Ashe after 2-3 hours into the game
Balthier is a glorified chauffeur who's backstory of once being a judge and son of Cid is completely irrelevant and plays no part to the story, even when caught up to Cid

There is no point in hating him since he doesn't do enough good or bad to deserve being hated. The other characters being more interesting doesn't add or subtract anything about Vaan's character. It is not relevant to the discussion
