If you concerned about the overall story, just play Mass Effect 2 alone.

Half the appeal of the games was the world building and characters. The other half was the illusion that your choices matter. All of those things get flushed down the shitter in the end, so unless you purely want it for the gameplay, don't bother.

Just play them all a little bit and continue with the ones you enjoy as you're playing them without worrying about something that happens after your potential fun playing the games.

That battle on the junction, before launching those big ass missiles into Reaper. it was sick ass fun on hard difficulity, waves of banshees and brutes swarming from all directions, good stuff.
It sadly got overshadowed by totally shitty Citadel scenes that followed it,

The gameplay is still entertaining, just don't get too involved in the story because it really goes down the drain, and not only the ending, it starts in ME2 and only gets worse in ME3
All three are worth playing at least once. More than that and you'll see how your choices meant fuck-all.

Playing the mass effect series trough is so cheap nowadays that it's definitely worth it.
Combat is fun, the characters are cool and likeable and the story as a whole is good, it's just that the story's ending gets a bit ruined at the end but it's not like you lost all the fun you had.
