SteamOS or Win10?
>>
SteamOS is literally Debian with Steam installed.
>>
SteamOS is really only good for Steam machines or using a TV to play PC games on. basically it gives you the console experience on PC. May as well use Ubuntu instead since you can game and use it as a normal desktop.

I didn't want to choose so I just duel boot. Windows 10 for Windows games and Linux for SteamOS games and general desktop shit.
>>
>>330517318
Just get debian if you want steam os that much
>>
Neither

Same, but I run Linux all the time and virtualize windows for Windows-only apps

inb4 muh vulkan/mantle api, it pales in comparison to dx12 and everyone in the industry knows it.

You can fuck right off, mate.
>>
>>330518268
If by 'pales in comparison' you mean 'doesn't require locking yourself into Microsoft's console execution layer crap that turns your PC into a glorified Xbox.

Vulkan+SDL is the future.
>>
>>330518268
Meh, I tried out Dx12 in ROtTR today and got a slightly improved framerate, although most of that was due to the new Nvidia driver not the Tomb Raider patch. On the other hand I'm pretty sure it broke SMAA in SweetFx so it's a mixed bag for me.
>>
>>330517318
Win 10 + Ubuntu dual boot
>>
>>330518704
That's not safe. If you absolutely still need Windows the only proper way to run it is virtualized on top of a GNU/Linux host so that it does not have either direct access to your hard drive, or access to network hardware and only gets direct access to a dedicated GPU.
>>
>>330518503

Microsoft already has a monopoly, as if anyone except turbo nerds give a shit about linux or steam os.

Microsoft won a decade or more ago, better to lean into it.

If we lose this fight now, we have no hope when the Windows 7 EOL, lock to the Windows Store, and DX13 Xbox Two Exclusive happen.
>>
>>330519308
Well if you're building a living room Machine having it work like a toy isn't a bad thing. Perhaps though you're confused in thinking that SteamOS somehow makes a PC into something that is not a PC? Contrary to Microsoft's misinformation campaign SteamOS is an open platform in all the ways that Windows 10 is not. You are in no way tied to Steam as a software source, and it is entirely possible to install Kodi, Retroarch, or any other Linux software you may want to run. Though obviously not all software is going to be a good fit for a living room entertainment box.

What I meant with it pales in comparsion you mongoloid hippies is that Dx12 is the standard with which the industry is measured, all Vulkan does is lags behind and ends up implementing DX12's features by reverse engineering it, oh but "microsoft is le evil corp xD" . Whereas DX12 has the support of industry giants and a state of the art R&D, Vulkan only has an offshoot group of your typical linux nerds group which by the way they tried to go full corporate with their versions of Linux.

False, D3D12 and Vulkan are both based on Mantle. Nothing in Vulkan is dependent on DX otherwise Microsoft would have killed it like they did with Long's Peak years ago.

>DX12 has the support of industry giants
Except that many of those same industry giants also support Vulkan. Already companies and games that would have provoked "Never ever" memes several years ago from Windows shills now either already support Linux, or have been announced. Who could have foreseen for instance that Microsoft would fail to get Street Fighter 5 on Xbox, at the same time it was confirmed for Linux? Or that Xcom 2 would not be released on Xbox, but would be a same day release on Linux with SteamOS as its only console platform?

Then there's this mysterious image of a rising sun over ancient english ruins with a penguin.

About half a year ago or more, and about as well as you'd expect considering you haven't heard shit about them.

Why?
>>
>>330522959
Because BSD isn't true free software, although it's technically better than most GNU/Linux distros.
>>
>>330521610
It was pretty much DoA. The problem is that there's no real market. Console gamers don't want to deal with Linux and it's lack of games. (although it's a lot better than it used to be, and will probably get better in the future.) hardcore PC gamers don't want a prebuilt, they would rather just build their own PC. People who want couch gaming on PC can just stream to their TV using Steamlink or something similar.

Ironically it appear Microsoft wants to do something similar with Xbox, lord knows how that will turn out.
>>
Just install debian, or linux mint debian if you don't know what you are doing.
People cry that linux has no game, but that's simply not true.
Hell a lot of older games run better in wine than they do in windows now.

DOTA 2 and Counter Strike aren't enough, valve has good intentions but Linux needs something huge to bring over the casuals and "normie" market. Something like WoW or LoL. And yes I know there's Wine but good luck convincing console gamers and people playing on their mom's laptop to learn Wine or how to run Windows on a VM.
>>
>>330524334
Doesn't wine and VM heavy on performance? I would imagine normies would suffer performance issues with people playing on their mom's laptop.
>>
Windows 10 is botnet, selling our porn habits to the highest bidders.

Then again we're happily taking mobile botnets (Android/Apple) in the ass.
>>
>>330524763
Hell, your ISP tracks at least 1 year's worth of everything you send and download through them.

The thing is though, I would much rather cut down on the amount of people watching me than to give in and end up with marketers on my phone 24/7.

If you seriously want to be free from that shit you wouldn't be using any version of windows.

Has anyone tried OpenMW? I wish Bethesda would just port their shit to Linux, it's a lot more difficult and tedious to mod in Wine. TES and Fallout modding are the main reasons I have a copy of Windows still.

Just cut the middleman and give us your credit card numbers and personal details, while you waste all your process cycles and memory on useless animations and seed torrents 24/7 to waste your bandwidth. The perfect Windows 10 experience without installing Windows 10.
>>

You can easily make your own.

http://www.moderndefrag.com/2013/10/turn-windows-7-pc-into-dedicated-steam.html/

I took my old PC, followed that guide through and it's now my console in the living room. Whatever I can't play on it, I can stream via Steam.
>>

why 7?

upgrade to 10 for dx12 and then boot to big picture
>>

Waste of time. Fresh install, disable Windows Updates service (and other useless services) and you're golden.

I don't understand any off this.
I mean you can play all Steam games on windows, why is this a thing?
>>
>>330527857
GabeN thinks microsoft is trying ro create a closed system like iOS so he jumped on the Linux ship. Given the recent events with the windows store he's probably right.
>>
Ubuntu or linux mint
>>
>>330528087
That's extremely unlikely, given that not even Mac OS X is a closed system and Microsoft is dependent on the business users, who need an open system and backwards compatibility.
A desktop OS can not exist as a closed system.
>>
>want to play Xbone games and do cross play with xboners

Welp. Hopefully Phil fixes it before killer instinct comes to pc. Too bad for people who bought tomb raider and gears.
