mother 3 is retarded. all the drama is hamfisted as fuck, the game is linear as shit, the story is jrpg as hell and boils down to AMERICA BAD JAPAN GOOD, it didn't actually improve the combat from the previous games at all (a shitty rhythm thing to do more damage doesn't count because they made every boss have way more HP to compensate, so they're even bigger slogs), all the "wacky" stuff feels way too forced as if itoi is aware that earthbound has a reputation for being silly now and 90% of the plot happens in the last 10% of the game
the only part of the game that actually felt like the first two games was the monkey chapter

mother 1 has a super open world that feels like a goddamn adventure to get through

mother 1 understands how to make a good story in a video game and has all the emotional plot beats happen directly to the player, through music cues and in-battle stuff
mother 3 has characters talk and talk and talk about how much everything sucks
mother 1 is kind of tedious to play because the random encounter rate is way too high, but it does something neat with it by giving the player magicant as an "escape" at any time before then taking away that saftey blanket
mother 3 is kind of tedious to play because every enemy has a billion health and you have to sit through way longer animations/rhythm game stuff constantly, but the combat doesn't actually do anything interesting with this
the emotional climax of mother 1 is when you beat the fucked up invincible alien that's been screwing with everything the whole game by singing the song you've been slowly building up throughout the game
the emotional climax of mother 3 involves you standing there while a character that was in the game for literally 10 minutes kills himself and you read lots of dialogue about HOW SAD this totally is
the original NES version of mother 1 is a bit of a mess but either a patch for the NES version or the gameboy version is plenty playable

Used it my first time but on my other four playthroughs I went without it. Game honestly isn't that hard in my opinion. I always hear people claim Ana and Lloyd are basically dead weight but both are useful in battle.

I think I enjoyed Earthbound the least. MOTHER 3 was a wild ride the whole way through. I actually hated Earthbound Zero until I played the MOTHER 1 + 2 re-translation

1 had an excellent setting and a great story for when it came out.
2 was an improvement over 1 all around gameplay-wise and story-wise it was pretty much on par. Setting-wise, I think 1 was a bit better, though.
3 was cool, but it somehow lost a bit of the vibe that made 1 and 2 so quirky and original. A bit too sentimental for my taste but it compensates by having cool characters and a pretty cool, albeit different, setting.
