That arc seemed so stupid for the first few episodes, then holy shit did it get fucking sweet. Zero and Rose, all the weenie furries actually turning out to be pretty cool, and the romance of the century.
I love how there seems to be a consistent logic to both shows' bullshit fightan magic, and nothing is ever explained as just "Friendship Power".

They didn't exactly make shit up themselves. It was actually Arakawa, the mangaka for the original, who crafted a whole new story and ending.

Square Enix had three games on PS2 and two games on Wii. Only the first two PS2 games came over.

Dual Sympathy on the DS was pretty great. I recommend that one.
