I don't know about obsolete but they make certain bosses easier. If your a poorfag who can't summon people then Simon's Bowblade makes the cheap chalice bosses(Undead Giant, Abhorrent Beast) easy breezy

Dreams in Lovecraft are ambiguously real. Another dimension sort of.
The question the ending wants you to ask is, was this some nightmare dimensions? Is my character now waking up in the "real world" or was I always there. This is important because dying in a nightmare doesn't necessarily kill something in real life and vice versa but they can still eb connected.
For example, it's implied all the blood drunk hunters get sucked into the Hunter's Nightmare upon death.
