It's a shame Hexen 2 is such a disappointment. Both D'Sparil and Korax were kickass Serpent riders, shame I can't say the same about Eidolon. I blame the new engine.

D'Sparil was fucking dope compared to Korax. Korax kept standing still like a wuss and had to drown you in traps and minions to be any real threat.

Easy in what regard?? Maybe it's been a while since i last played through Heretic but I recall that game being quite a trek. Maybe the enemies don't instagib you at every turn but there's still plenty to be had with Heretic. Fuck yeah Heretic.

Well, the prequel to Hexen is Heretic so you could start with that. It is pretty similar to Doom. Hexen is a bit more puzzleish and has a hub world.

Hexen was fucking dogshit then and it's still dogshit today.

Literally the only good thing about Hexen is that it extended the Doom engine in a lot of neat ways that ZDoom subsequently poached so you could use them in Doom maps..

If we're talking vanilla, the game was fairly generous with ammo, and, even though your un-Tome'd weapons were usually dogshit, your opponents weren't the fucking brightest, and you could get out of a tight spot easily.
About the only challenging enemies in the game were the boss-types (the Iron Lich can fucking suspend you in midair), and fucking D'Sparil himself.

I don't know, the hardest difficulty where the enemies and projectiles move twice as fast is a decent challenge.
What I really appreciate about Heretic though, is that there are no fucking hitscan enemies. You only have yourself to blame if you get hit.

I stopped playing hexen 2 in the roman world, even the early 3D giant spiders creep me out too much. I guess there are spiders basically everywhere but I don't fully understand why there are so many in the roman-themed area.

Wrath of Cronos, but you'll need zandronum/zdoom/gzdoom to run it.
Be sure to get the monster replacer and patches so you can play it in your favorite DOOM maps as well.
