There is a shitload of new stuff to do and basically everything from abyssea onwards still serves some purpose. I dont play anymore but most of the servers are dead save for asura. Its pretty much the busiest server now. Its sort of where everybody flocked to. Reddit has a couple of big linkshells there and there is something like at least 1000 people on at all times there. I would sub again and play but I sort of cringe at the thought of playing with "conmmunity" linkshells.
in 2015 they tied all the storyline stuff together with Rhapsodies of Vanadiel or whatever. If you go through all of the missions it eases the cool downs on the different things in the game. Like for example at a certain point in Rhapsodies you can go into dynamis every 2 hours. Basically you can stay in there all day now and farm for your relic if you wanted to. Same goes for salvage re-entry and limbus and a bunch of other random things.

If you want to slam through all the story stuff in the game you can basically solo everything aside from the Adoulin and Rhapsodies things. I did all the stuff solo a couple of years back minus those things and it was actually pretty nice getting to see the stories again. Wings of the goddess is my fav expansion story by far IMO.

They're not shutting down, but I know someone who will be hosting their own private server soon. It will be vanilla, starting from scratch with some game fixing patches. A lot of work has gone into the beta testing, it's looking very promising.

Because the means to do so, the PS2 Devkits are dying out and can't be fixed. So once they're gone, they're gone.
If they were to port it to PS4 or any new console they'd have to remake the entire game. Which they are already doing with the mobile remake, but yeah, good luck getting that to be marketable on PS4.

Everyone realizes the situation that XI is in and tend to be helpful, but everybody has also done most of the content and are only in end-game areas.
For the main game, 4 of the 5 retail expansions, and 1 of the 5 Add-On expansions they can be done solo without much grinding (comparatively) and easy to obtain gear. The main reason being the ability to use "Trusts" (AI controlled NPCs) as party members. Though it is more fun to do things with others or a friend, and is actually recommended.
3 of the 5 Add-Ons have restrictions on using trusts, and the last retail expansion + last Add-On can be done solo with sufficient grinding and knowledge of your role but is easier and funner with friends. I did the Final Final story stuff with a group online and we all had fun and a sense of relief that we cleared it.
Plus if you're an old player and never finished old content and/or want to say you "beat" an MMO, now is the best time to do so than before.
