It's a pretty shallow genre originally designed to be a quarter eater at arcades.
There should be one or two coming out over the years via indie devs or Kickstarter and such, but nothing from big developers.

Well Vanillaware is still making games but that's about it really.
Stuff like Bayonetta or God Hand can be interpreted as modern bear em ups. Especially God hand, considering you're fighting a bunch of bikers and cuballs and shit like most arcade bear em ups.

This. DMC kind of made it evolve into a hybrid genre. GodHand, DC, and the Warriors are more traditional examples of the genre though
