Pretty sure Deathwing caused a lot of deaths during the War of the Ancients and Cata. You can also see in End Time that he can succeed in ending all life.
Before he was Deathwing, he was kind of like a shaman, but I believe they said that his "corruption" happened very early on. So shaman probably isn't the right word.
This is Warcraft we're talking about, which isn't known for its vast character developments. Even so, Deathwing was interesting, to say the least in Warcraft II.
Plus, Blizzard was hyping up Deathwing's return way back in vanilla. I even remember that there's a secret cutscene in BC with his wife that blatantly states Deathwing was alive. And then he comes back and just screams about death and burning and who the hell cares.
Blizz retcons shit every single day, as demonstrated with WoD and that Illidan is back in Legion. I honestly hope they bring back Deathwing from the dead at some point.

That's not because he's some god of death. It's because he's a fucking dragon, and dragons are powerful. But he's also a fucking aspect of earth, so he's immensely more powerful. Plus in Cata he's got the gifts of his new masters, which basically made him into a killing machine. Still not a god, or any kind of ties to necromantic powers. Death in Deathwing doesn't really signify anything.
Deathwing in Cata is basically an empty shell of his former self, a puppet of the old gods, and a giant living time bomb.
