What do you call games that are overall a little shoddy but they're recommended anyways because they're ambitious or unique or otherwise engaging and interesting? Maybe the equivalent of a good B-movie, lacking in polish and noticeably flawed but full of character and soul that doesn't necessarily make you overlook the bad parts but accept both the good and bad as all part of the experience. Maybe it has clunky controls coupled with platforming segments (pic related) or drastically changes the gameplay for a good chunk of the game for no reason (Harvester). Games like S.T.A.L.K.E.R., Drakengard, Rule of Rose, and Vampire: Bloodlines ― The Masquerade.

Most things that could be considered cult hits are pretty popular around here. American McGee's Alice, God Hand, 999, Hotel Dusk, War of the Monsters, Pathologic, ect. All could be considered cult hits but around here they're pretty well known.

Basically EA sold the movie rights to a studio. Said studio canceled their plans to make a movie, so American McGee himself set up a kickstarter to raise money to buy them. All I know is he succeeded and talked to various film makers about it in order to make short movies with a wide variety of art styles (live action, stop motion, 2D animation, etc.)

To be honest, I'm not that fond of the whole "15 year old kid saves the world" thing JRPGs tend to have, and one of the reasons I like Drakengard 1 and Nier is that they have very unconventional main characters by JRPG standards.
