I've been playing through this game lately, and Jesus Christ, the prologue was just the most un entertaining, slow, utter piece of dog shit that's ever and out of a Mario game
And the Peach segment sure didn't help
Chapter 1 was a complete bust with the only good thing coming out of it being he Koopa Bros.
And Chapter 2 was utter hell with the slow pace and incessant backtracking inside the ruins

Honestly, when does this game get good?

Chapter 1. The prologue is pretty terrible and the Goomba Village is uninteresting, I'll agree on that.

Aside from some standout content like Bow's Mansion and Tubba Blubba, Shy Guy's Toybox, and the Yoshi Island, 1 is generally inferior to 2 because they weren't sure how far they wanted to push the envelope yet. A lot of areas are creatively "safe" like the Goomba Town or drag out like the desert. TTYD pretty much went "fuck that" and just did what it felt like.

Alpha Dream sure isn't perfect, and they probably did best on their second try (SSS) just like IS, but they're smart enough to keep what works.

It's still a shame that they've done stupid things like turning attacks that coordinate with overworld abilities into items, creating exposition fairies like Stuffwell and Starlow instead of actually writing out situations with NPCs and pantomime, and forcing weird gimmicks like Giant Fights, but at least their games are still fun.

Honestly I just quickly checked a map for the desert, but I thought the temple itself was really fun.
And looking for a mysterious character in the eastern city was very old-school adventure like, pretty memorable.

Bitch did I SAY it had better pacing?

I'm saying it was more engaging because they didn't tepidly pull punches. EVERY area was something unique and memorable, for better or for worse, and was more directed. When TTYD gets annoying it's because it's either shoving a lame gimmick or directly making you backtrack, rather than just having absurdly large areas like the desert or getting the flowers to face Huff n Puff.

If anything TTYD has more annoying parts to replay, but the difference is that it makes a stronger impression and rarely has areas that are big for their own sake.

Eh, The setting gets boring a little too fast and the new character is not that fun to use at first (he gets better though).

I replayed it a few months back and agree. Peach sucks the fun out of both PM and TTYD. The intro to PM worked the first time all those years ago because this was entirely new. It has lost all relevance and fun factor over time.

The first chapter I was just kinda rushing through and the second turned me off with the backtracking too. Halfway through 3 I just gave up.

TTYD has some serious pacing issues too (seriously, fuck Peach segments) but is nowhere near as bad as the start of PM. Even SPM has an intro that feels relevant to the story even if it is way too long.

Now I'm bummed out about Paper Mario: People of Color again.

Am I the only one who actually liked the sequence breaks where you play Peach? Even the Bowser segments were fun at times.

I liked SPM more than TTYD, even though I played the latter first, because of the pretty interesting story and engagement with the environment. It's sad that this is kind of lacking in PM 64.

I don't know, I didn't have a stopwatch for the cake baking segment so it was really hard for me as a kid, and most of the other Peach segments are just walking around. They're not very bad, and the PM64 ones I think actually evolve into something interesting, but overall they're weaker than the rest of the game.
