Regardless of intent, if a player disconnects from a match their score should be penalized. If you can't provide a reliable connection there's no reason that should be reflected in your online ranking.

I don't think you'd get many false positives if you restricted it to the set of players who were losing AND in the disconnect occurred in the last 10 seconds of the match.

The real problem is that the game doesn't really send any usable telemetry during a match.

There's not really a way to do that without fucking people who legitimately have shitty internet. This way they only have to track a limited number of people, not EVERYONE who disconnects a lot, and if they have a stupidly high winrate AND constantly disconnect it's really easy to tell something stupid is going on.

Bad telemetry. They don't know who was winning at the time of a disconnect, so the only option for an automated system would be to punish both - if we're talking about a case-by-case thing here.

That incentivizes quitting when you're losing because you were going to lose the points anyways, but fuck that other guy he's cheap and all that.

Nope, fuck that. Why should you suffer for getting matched up with a laggy opponent or a spotty connection? That's out of your control and, in a lot of cases, is the fault of the game.

Punishing any/all disconnects is only appropriate in an environment whee there are no connectivity issues whatsoever and SF5 has had a host of issues so far.

Fuck off. This is exactly the shit I'm talking about. If I have to do this for your game and only your game, it's the fucking game's fault and I shouldn't be punished for trying to not get fucked by it.

Ever noticed that "Bone of order" in your inventory? If you keep alt+f4'ing or pulling the plug constantly on invasions, you get soft banned from multiplayer. You can't summon, be summoned or invade, but can still be invaded.

Using a bone of order lifts the ban, but it's a consumable item and you only get one at a time, that respawns after 10-14 hours of actual game time (afking in Majula won't do).
