Anyone have a Steam Controller?
How is it? Worth 50 bucks?
What games do you like to play? How patient are you?
Trash, just get a 360 or xbone controller.
If you don't have a controller, get it.
If you already have a controller and you're use to it, don't get it.
Apparently it's shit, and you dont want to play games that require precise movement with a controller anyway so stick with xbox360

I'd rather use a PS controller
>>329722070
Pretty much everything, lots of Civ V right now though
>>329722116
But you can't use that in place of a mouse though.
>>329722161
I have a USB SNES/PS2 equivalent controllers, but something for PC seems neat, guess a new game would be better instead potentially.
>>329722178
But it's not
That thing looks incredibly uncomfortable to hold.
>>329722267
i use it for civ v all the time
much more relaxing that way and it doesn't restrict you at all
>>329722342
is it like touchpad on laptops
>>329722342
it looks awesome for civ, but ya I might just wait for a sale or something
>>329721872
I love it. Never want to use a different controller ever again.
>>329722313
you would be surprised
>>329722313
its actually really comfortable
>>329722178
>Neatly placed on top so he can pick it back up
I used it to play Dragon's Dogma. It has a steep learning curve and you really need to tweak it a lot to get it exactly how you like it. However it has a lot of customizability and can do things that a normal controller can't like precise mouse movement.
If you don't like learning and tinkering with new things then don't bother. If you do then you'll probably enjoy it.
>>329722267
If you like to play strategy games then perhaps you should go for it, keep in mind that the controller is very customizable and it's getting a lot of support from Valve about every week
>>329722417
Not really, depends on the settings you use
I just got one as a gift, think of playing old snes games with it and dragons dogma. What games are you guys playing with it?
the faux d-pad just fucks my shit up
>>329722417
except you use your thumb instead of finger laid out with your palm face down against a surface
it makes a huge difference
>>329722463
What happened to the "community remapping" thing they kept talking about? Wouldn't that completely fix this issue?
>>329722417
in texture or in responsiveness? it isn't uncomfortable to the touch and it happens to be incredibly responsive with every game possible in my experience. there are a variety of ways to set it up as well as far as even gyro controls.
which are incredibly fluid by the way
>>329721872
I wanted to like it so badly. I like steam so i thought this would cater to me quite well.
Its a piece of shit. Tried to play something as brainless as GTA5 and it was like playing with my feet. Not to mention its still buggy as shit. Biggest buyer's remorse ive ever had.
>>329722116
>>329722178
>All these wrong opinionf=s
>>329721872
Not on sale in AUS yet as far as I know.
>>329722609
you can choose from any number of community presets or make your own
>>329721872
Depends how you want to use it, really.
You can't just say if its worth it for one thing, that's both a yes or no statement.
>>329722609
Games have a library of button configurations for it
>>329722609
You can choose from tons of community presets, but in the end it comes down to personal preference since the controller is customizable as fuck
>>329721872
I use it for spelunky. Once you get used to it it's great. The grooves for the dpad are very helpful.
I really like the pedal shifters since nothing is natively mapped to them which means I can attach what I want. I'm sure that will change soon though as more developers take them for useless shit.
hard to imagine not owning one again. will probably buy a revamped version if they release it for local multiplayer shit

Rocket League, Talos Principle.
makes playing strategy games with a controller possible
objectively better for any FPS/TPS than traditional controller with sticks
Poor when it comes to games requiring a d-pad
>customizable
>what is joy2key
Imagine if Valve stuck with the original concept of having a trackball
>have had an old xbox 360 wired controller for 10 or so years now
>well broken in but is getting to the point of degradation
>the thumb sticks are literally worn and malformed to how I naturally rest on it
>but due to how it's noticeably degrading lately, want a new controller
Kind of had a hard decision between getting a new wired 360 controller and trying a Steam controller.
Ultimately ended up going the safer route though with the 360 controller and also getting a buffalo SNES controller, since the 360 d-pad is literal trash.
Still pretty interested in getting a steam controller eventually, though.

i have one and i hate it. There is no real D-Pad, and I still play a lot of old games (and new) that need one. The track pads are exactly what they are. track pads. They would've been better off with a fucking track ball. I need physical feedback. The only thing i liked this controller for was browsing the web. It works well for that
get a ds4 or xbox controller.
Anyone tried WoW with it?
>>329722848
when joy2key lets me virtualize a trackball on my controller let me know
>>329722868
>hurr hurr the grass is always greener on the other side
They chose the final design for a reason, shut up already
>>329722868
I wonder what that gordon plays like
>>329722178
Recycle your bottles, asshole.
>>329722942
That's not at all what I was saying, dumbass
>>329723002
fuck the earth
>>329723174
I'd fuck the earth if you know what I mean
It's actually not that bad for shooters, if you utilize the motion controls you can even compete with M+KB users (though probably not on a competitive level)

>>329721872
I've heard good things, but I'll stick with a 360 or DS3
>>329722868
You can make the touchpad act like a trackball. It feels identical because of the haptics. It's really cool.
Basically, it's the most versatile controller. If you want to play a variety of games, like shooters, strategy games, racing games etc. then get one.
If you're just going to be playing 2D platformers and whining about D-Pads then probably not.
>>329721872
Strength of the steam controller comes from being able to play everything,
the down side is enjoy relearning a controller.
>How hard can it be, right pad is for the mouse.
Play an fps on a track pad.
Entirely depends on which games you play
>>329723649
I was better than I ever was with a trackpad within minutes. I wouldn't play a competitive/fast-paced shooter with it but it's certainly a ton better than a trackpad or standard dual-stick controller.
yes, its much better for shooters.
no, screen scrolling by stick is not an acceptable input method for fps/tps
Worse for 2D stuff because lack of d-pad
>>329723649
>Play an fps on a track pad.
>he wasn't a poor kid in high school with only a laptop for CS 1.6
>>329723565
That's really my only complaint with it. The pads are way too clicky. It feels weird to try to use as a D-pad, but if you just set it to touch then it's too easy to send commands accidentally.
>>329723649
>Strength of the steam controller comes from being able to play everything,
Except platformers. Xbox controller is still the king of that genre. For most other genres, the Steam controller is on-par with or possibly outperforms the xbox controller if your configuration is good enough.
>>329723480
Have you tried the DS4 yet?
http://cdn.akamai.steamstatic.com/store/controllerupdates/gyro3_web.mp4
>>329723867
>Xbox controller is still the king of that genre.
>platformers
thats the wiiu pro controller
>>329721872
Why is there a speaker where a thumbstick should be
>>329723867
I would agree that the best controller for platformers is Xbox but only 360 or one. The d-pad of the original xbox controller was okay but they got fucked up way too easily.
>>329722741
The D-pad is shit and the second pad on the right in no way replaces a second joystick for ANYTHING
>>329724114
Because that's not a speaker.
>>329724180
I think he knows that anon
>>329721872
its not worth it, buy yourself an xbox one controller.
it SEEMED like a good idea, but then once you start using it you will quickly wish the thumbstick was a dpad, and then the left touch pad was a thumbstick. Having touch for movement is terrible.
>>329724170
>no way replaces a second joystick for ANYTHING
its objectively better for fps and camera control.
>>329724170
It's not meant to replace a second joystick. It's something else, and far better.
>>329723270
I'd like to see you stick your dick in a volcano
>>329721872
>How is it
It's great, I use it for everything
>worth 50 bucks
Nah. I only like it because I'm a console baby who prefers playing games with a controller than a keyboard and mouse. It's not better than a mouse, but I think it's the next best thing.
I'd say get it if you can get it on sale or if you have a coupon like I did.
Also, don't forget to wash your hands before using it.
>>329724170
In any third person game you can set the right pad so it spins the camera like a big trackball as opposed to slowly rotating with an analog stick. How is this not better?
Also, I've noticed most of the negative opinions on the steam controller start with 'I've heard that..'.
>>329721872
If you have the patience to relearn a controller it's fuckin' amazing. An absolutely ridiculous amount of customization available.
I'm having a hard time learning it, but that's partly because I've almost exclusively used Sony controllers for the past 25 years. Acquiring the muscle memory to instinctively know where my finger is on the pads is the hardest part for me.
Setting up stuff like head tracking for the gyro sensor and mode shifting with the paddles works wonders for cockpit games with lots of binds.Elite: Dangerous
For a while I was pissed at how innacurate it was to aim in FPS/TPS with the touchpad, until I realized it was still more accurate than an analog stick. Just less accurate than a mouse, unless you do some wacky shit like some people have done with CS:GO.
TL;DR: It's awesome but you have to relearn how to use a controller.
>>329721872
I found playing Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory to be very enjoyable with the steam controller. I was using the top rated controller scheme.
