anyone else just fucking hate open world games generally speaking?
It just feels like these games are big for the sake of being big. Everything feels empty a lot of the time, there's entire stretches where you either go through a lot of fucking nothing to reach the next city or just use fast travel (which I think is a sign of bad game design, that you are so aware that your players don't even want to see your world that they just skip that part entirely) with random collectibles of no real worth lying about to give the illusion that you aren't just wasting your time while going from mission to mission.
Compare that to something like a Yakuza game. You've just got a single town there but every street corner has something new to do, even if it's just eating at a restaurant to refill health. You can probably walk from one end to the other in less than ten minutes (barring any random battles you'll get into.) There's arcades and karaoke and bowling alleys and golfing courses and batting cages and hostess clubs. Sure there's pointless collectibles in the form of locker keys, but at least they're just lying around the city in places you're already going past anyway and not buried in the middle of nowhere solely to give you an excuse to drive a thousand miles out of the nearest town to get a fucking gun part or something.
nah
I agree.

I like games like gta but mgsv was shit. I got bored and drop that shit. Also I fucking hate desert maps
They're starting to reach a point where it's gotten silly, yeah.
In GTA4 you were able to enter restaraunts and some buildings, whereas GTAV you can't do shit all. It feels awkward.
in MGSV you spend half the game traversing the same areas with different enemy placements
Open world simply means "here, a map, some obstacles, some things to do. You decide the order while you go fuck yourself".
Open world is just a way of skimming over having actual level/map design.
Honestly I wish this "linearity = bad, open world = good" meme would end.
fuck I love drinking water
what is the point of most open world games when you can and most likely will just fast travel in most of them
it seems like a huge waste of budget

I started feeling this way pretty early on after Oblivion came out. It's like a genre that looks good as an idea on paper but actually plays poorly. It's pure quantity over quality.

this
i can't stand how homogeneous and overrated open world games are
they're bait for autistics who would rather role play than play a game with effort and vision behind it
>>329714332
Tibia is still the only game I know of that got open world just right
The problem is that they keep making maps that are SO HUGE WOAH BIGGEST MAP EVER with giant empty spaces instead of focusing a dense, carefully constructed world
Open world games are shovelware
>>329714332
I blame Skyrim. I liked Skyrim, but ever since every game has tried to capture the open world thing and they all fucking suck at it. It probably also doesn't help that the gaming community has had an anti-linear push for years.
Remember all those images making fun of new game design by showing how old games were a fucking labrynth? People like that are just as to blame as anyone else.

Best is open world games with actual level/map design eg Dark Souls, Gothic 1/2, and Morrowind.
GTA is the only open world games I enjoy
>>329718593
>good linear map/level design
it'll stop being a meme once designers figure out what to fucking do
>>329714332
I've always hated open world games. They're just fucking boring. Never got past the first two missions in any GTA cus they're just not worth my time.
>>329723137
I love GTA but for some reason RDR bored me. RDR was just too repetitive scenery wise and vehicles being limited to horses and coaches, plus all the technology limit hurt it a lot.
>>329714332
I agree, make things small but varied.
>anyone else just fucking hate open world games generally speaking?
more than 30fps and instant loading times is also a bad thing, right sonyfriend?
>>329714332
I didn't get the joke of OP's image.
>>329728331
It means having unprotected sex with your sister
>>329728509
I don't see it. Is this a ruse?
>>329728331
the joke is that there is no joke
>>329728557
No, it's just sort of subtle
>>329728583
The joke is that she's trying not to laugh and spit it out, you can see it in her face that she's trying to hold it in
Open world is an easy way to skim over writing.
Bethesda game story always sucks, and is short as fuck to boot. They compensate by making a fuckhuge sandbox for you to aimlessly wander around in trying to find the fun.
Meanwhile Obsidian actually wrote a good Fallout story with New Vegas, but Todd shows up every time to shout I CAN'T CLIMB THAT! IT'S SHIT.
I've always hated it and I've always been in a minority.
Its dumb as shit that you need to walk/drive to the next level and collect some "optional" collectibles, which, if achievement completion rates on PS4 and Steam are any indication nobody actually gets.
But I spent most of my youth playing arcade games, and most of my young adult life working in arcades. The idea that a game needs more than 1 hour of content has always been absurd to me.

>The idea that a game needs more than 1 hour of content has always been absurd to me.
I can definitely see where you're coming from. My favorite game of all time can be done in like 45 minutes. It's not about how much there is to do but about how much you want to do it. I could play that game a million times and not get bored.
I like a game that encapsulates a sense of adventure. Witcher 3 did this perfectly.
I enjoyed GTAV but it was very empty and was quite small
>ITT angst teens who never played any space ranger
how would MMO's work without open world?
>>329728331
All human beings become Caucasian, females, aged 18-30 when they drink water. It's a scientific fact.
>>329730902
I don't dislike them but I do dislike the way that so many games are giving up their originality to become open world.
Fifteen years ago Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy and The Legend of Zelda franchises were so different from each other that there was absolutely no confusing them.
In 2016 Metal Gear Solid is an open world game where you follow markers and complete numbered objectives, Final Fantasy is an open world game where you follow markers and complete numbered objectives and The Legend of Zelda will be an open world game where you follow markers and complete numbered objectives.

>nigger can't drink from a bottle
accurate
I don't get this meme. You prefer games with separate levels that you can't revisit? Why?
That game you're describing in your second paragraph sounds like it's open world too.
>>329727750
>gangsta gay men
This always freaks me the fuck out cause it goes against everything
Deadly premonition is the best open world game
The market is oversaturated and nobody can do it right. Devs don't put any effort into the actual game and just make a large map with quests set up at various places and call it a day despite the games not being fun and most of the world being empty.
