It's weird. There is this massive gap between games released after 2000 or so. Pre-2000 games felt nostalgic and old already in, say, 2002 or 2003. At this point, I doubt anyone is feeling nostalgia for Halo 4 or Skyward Sword. They seem recent.

Call of Duty 3 is still the very worst non-portable Call of Duty game, and it probably always will be.

In any case playing COD does increase your overall FPS skill - because of insanely high TTK you have to abuse cover and headglitch spots, and TDM increases your awareness - you can't always dumb rush people and win.
