What's the greatest story ever told in a video game?
VLR is a close second

not pic related, it's one of the most overrated games after undertale and ff7
gameplay is shit, over 50% of the game is just walking around watching your party go from one npc to another and babysitting them so they don't
get stuck on stuff. there's barely any interaction going on, and the only character setup you really need for dialogue is starting the game with 18 wisdom.
story is trying too hard, the game is framed as a mystery, only everything is explained to you by infodump characters. actual deep themes like how memory relates to personality are ignored in favor of pseudointellectual crap where putting words in all capital letters is supposed to make it more meaningful.
characters are shit, the only character with any real personality or development is morte. everyone else is just "the d&d monster manual says normally this race is like X, but this character is the opposite. wow!"

Kotor II

Yeah, look, this is the only answer I'll stand behind. No other game has really hooked me the whole way through like this one did.
>great characters
>interesting plot
>great music that enhances the story
>great cinematics
As close to perfect as you're going to get in a game.

I consider Nier to be among the best pieces of science fiction made post-2000. The world-building is Wolfe-tier, it gets a message across as good as Le Guin and is a solidly structured tragedy executed as a video game. Tragedy runs on pity and terror and Nier executed both very well. Nier is full of weak, pathetic characters for you to feel bad for, but what really makes it all work is the suffering of Papa-Nier. A strong character being undone by their own flaws is the most effective kind of suffering in fiction.
> No mention of Silent Hill 2
> Instead Memescape Torment and fucking Kojima games

All of these answers are acceptable except undertale, which I expect is just shitposting.
I loved the characters/story in Baldurs gate (2 especially), but Planescape is just so good. I'm trying to think of other better games, from a narrative perspective, but I really can't think of anything that isn't in here already.
>>329544601
Not the OP picture. The story was told pretty well, but the story itself wasn't too great.
>>329545536
Silent Hill 2 isn't that great.

Yes it is.

Planescape: Torment or Pathologic.
Torment, by far, at least of games that i have played in my life
FFVI

It relies too much on exposition. Angela's backstory is told entirely through a newspaper. Eddie just straight up tells you what he did. There's a scene where the player just has to walk down a long hallway while listening to a scene from James' past.
The monsters help a little in that regard, but for most of the game you're only fighting two of them (straightjackets and mannequins) over and over.

No game has made me kek harder than Final Fantasy VI. That part where you need to convince the Empire Soldiers to stop fighting, one of them has the most retardedly great line you'll ever see in a video game.
>>329544601
Fallout 1 with less then 3 intelligence is best story
>>329546268
I didn't read Angelas newspaper on the first round and still completly understood what her deal was, Eddie I agree on but that character was a bit superflous.
Silent Hill 2 is honestly pretty minimal in terms of exposition, compare it with a Bioware game game literally everything have to be explained by everyone three times over. Like the plot still has issues (the little monologue James has before fighting the two Pyramid heads is so bad it soudns like some anime-lovin intern wrote it), and I would rate Spec Ops as the better narrative, but it's still pretty fucking great, especially for a vidoe game.

You go around various places like a barracks and such talking to soldiers, then you go into a little side room and find one more. Some soldiers are receptive to the idea of quitting the fight but this guy isn't. He's sitting on a toilet.POO ON PEACE!
>>329546858
Probably what Putin says on the toilet. Guess it's time to replay.

Chrono Trigger.

Any tips for the best experience in this game? Inside 5 minutes of playing the game I got told that I could miss out on content by not being in the right place at the right time. This got me all freaked out and I stopped playing.
Planescape Torment
Knights of the Old Republic 2
Xenogears
Metal Gear Solid 2
Soul Reaver "trilogy"
Ghost Trick
Nier
Persona 2

Talk to everyone you can, save a lot and be sure to check out if you have new letters from time to time. There's a little sign that will show you, you get a letter but it's pretty subtle. I didn't realize it once and because of that I missed the mission that day.
I know there was a chart with tips for the game but I can't find it right now.
Literally nothing compares. 3100 kanji and Japanese fluency required to fully comprehend it, though.
