while it's true that uematsu hasn't always been consistent, there are still soundtrack hes done that absolutely pushed the boundaries of the medium at the time, especially while video game soundtracks were just generic beep boop beeps before.

personally I feel FF9s Soundtrack is the best Uematsu has ever done and if it has one thing it has variety.
I feel like a lot of that kind of musical variety went completely out of the window when fully voice acted games became a thing and I still think some games are worse off for it. There is a lot to be gained from a very prominent soundtrack in videogames, like Undertale has demonstrated recently.

There's no Command Menu, the combat mechanics are pretty much completely different.
