Probably will work the same way too: both players in rival covenants, one wants help, other goes to be summoned, is summoned as a purple phantom and instead of co-op, you fight
There was also a 5% chance to fight instead of co-op for the Hunter of Hunters covenant, didn't matter if you had invaded or killed NPCs or not

A lot of people hated the effect in Dark Souls and Dark Souls II, ask yourself why they introduced rings that remove it.

Purple phantom covenant is called the Mound-makers. They're an invasion covenant that gets a "shackled vertebra" every time they successfully kill someone, which they offer at an altar to level up in the covenant.
Might be some other rules but that's the gist of it as I understand it. Might be able to get the item other ways but it's certain you can get them from killing other players.
