I still quite like a few of them. It's like laughing at a part of the game you thought stood out with a group of friends, but on a global scale.

Props to you guys for not being afraid to admit it.
These things were seen as funny before they become overused after their spike in popularity.

It's the same way today, you see people spouting ironic memes on /v/ that are becoming popular and then used on Facebook and Reddit. It's just how things go, things get old and shitty. I can promise that the things that /v/ says today will be something they shit on in a year.
>>
>>329434885
Not sure I understand.
Am I supposed to stop liking Portal just because "the cake is a lie" turned into a meme by some retards? Which is really stupid considering the cake is real.

I played Portal the day it was released and it's in my top 10 best games of all times.
>>
>>329435145
The jokes when they came out were fine and pretty fun.

But like all jokes when they get over-saturated they lose their humor at alarming rates.
I feel internet humor in particular takes a nose dive the moment you hear it being talk about outside of the internet itself, mostly because it sounds dumb as shit.
>>
of course i did. we ALL did.
we only started looking down on them when reddit and 9gag blew up in popularity and normalfags took over our memes

even fucking ragecomics originated on 4chan and were well liked here. now they're deader than david bowie.
>>

>>
To this day, I still don't understand "the cake is a lie".
Where's the joke? What's funny about it?
>>
Some memes that came from games, I did get a good laugh out of, but others I just never got the humour of it.

The cake is a lie and Arrow to the knee being two of the most popular that I can think of that I just didn't seem to find as funny as other people did.

I will admit, quite a few things from the Borderlands series including Tales from the Borderlands have made me laugh, and I know that might get me some hate here, but meh.

I just dislike that now a days when something becomes popular, it's assumed that we have to hate it.
>>
>>329434973
>It's like laughing at a part of the game you thought stood out
Except neither the cake nor arrow knees stood out in any way. It was a line picked seemingly entirely at random.

Cake was a joke
Arrow in the knee is a genuine line thats one of 20 auto-replies from a guard, its not even "as funny" as the generic reply: "let me guess, someone stool your sweet roll" in a tone you'd use for kids.
Yet normies find it funny because that implies that every single guard in skyrim took arrows to the knee to become a guard, just shitty canned responses desu.
>>
>>329436396
I started singing the song

>>
>>329436252
>>329436306
>arrow to the knee
every single guard in the game telling you about how they once took an arrow to the knee was stupid and absurd. thus it became a meme.

>cake is a lie
in one chamber you can find an old hiding space behind a broken wall, with lots of things written on the walls, probably by a former test subject - most of it being "THE CAKE IS A LIE THE CAKE IS A LIE THE CAKE IS A LIE"
thus it became a meme.

all it takes to create a meme is some kind of repetitive and memorable catchphrase. once it catches on it quickly becomes self-perpetuating. that's the entire concept of memes.

I liked Portal a lot, and I thought the "secret areas" were interesting/funny, but I never thought "The cake is a lie" was humorous at all. I guess people just thought it was "SO RANDUMB" and started spamming it everywhere.

Speaking of Portal, Portal 3 fucking when? Or has Valve completely forgotten how to make a single-player game?

im pretty sure arrow in the knee was a metaphor for getting married and retards just didnt get the joke

im also 90% sure the meme status of that quote was manufactured by bethesda as a form of viral marketing since fallout new vegas had le nuclear winter xD shit
>>
>>329436671
>For whatever reason it became a joke
you know how dumb fanboys tend to argue about anything?
that's what portal fanboys did about the cake
>the cake is a lie! this writng on the wall says so!
>no, the cake is real! glados says so!
>glados lies all the time! plus i never get any cake in the game! the cake is a lie!
>no, that's bullshit! you clearly see that the cake exists in the epilogue! the cake is not a lie!

this pointless and moronic bickering, along with the cake being kind of a recurring 'lol so random and quirky' comic relief element in the game, eventually gave rise to its meme status
>>
>>329436779
Nuclearn winter wasn't even 1/10th the meme of arrow in knee but I think you're right, it's a metaphor but it doesn't matter when theres no context in the game except for in books or whatever, people don't read
>>
>>329436874
new vegas also wasn't even 1/10th as popular as skyrim...

plus the nuclear winter line isn't even half as moronic as the arrow line

No, he took a god damn arrow to the knee.
As in very large, possibly serrated, metal arrowhead into the joint at the knee.

For a normal human body that would lead to probably permanent damage, so no more mountain climbing.

Also, I've never heard of that as a metaphor. Cupid's arrow, arrow to the heart, that might make sense, but why the knee?
>>
>>329436936
Actually you can't find anything related in-game to arrow in the knee being a saying, it's some nordic saying, which is vaguely skyrim's setting so yeah... Nobody finds out about that without searching on the internet.
>>
>>329436218
It's a silly statement that makes sense if you've played Portal. Meaning that when you bring it up somewhere on the internet out of the blue, chances are you'll have people from your in-group replying to you. People like that.
Ever seen someone use meme arrows in a youtube comment? Same principle.

/v/ hates old memes because either they're too young to have them experienced first hand or because they got popular
>>
>>329434885
I never understood the appeal of "the cake is a lie", it wasn't even a joke in the game, and yet gained traction as a "joke" among people who didn't even play Portal.
Maybe I'm just an autist.

Thorn in your side?
Pain in the ass?

You can't really be a callous adventurer anymore when you have a wife and possibly kids.

At the same time, you most likely spent your time whacking shit with a sword like you do the whole fucking game, so logically you'd become a guard.

"Arrow to the knee" was most likely used as it better fit an adventurer's end of exploration.

The cake is a lie wasn't a meme in itself, though. You retards made it that way

Of course
I definitely liked at least some of them before they got super popular
that was the problem.
I'm not trying to hate on them solely because of popularity. but it's because they became so popular, they started getting used every where, by people who didn't understand the context or the source material at all. You start hearing them out of place, where they don't make any sense, in addition to the millions of times that they get used in a somewhat correct setting.
After all of that they just aren't funny anymore.

i dont know about you, but i never found 'cake was a lie' or 'arrow to the knee' funny. i didn't even think they could become memes at all, they just seemed so fitting for the situation and never actually stood out at all
>>
I'll admit, it takes me a while to start liking something, but only because this place has a way of influencing the way I think somewhat. I remember a time when I thought dubs was fucking stupid, but little after little you guys just kept posting it every single fucking second of the day, and eventually I came to like it as well.

I swear, 4chan is a model for propaganda, the perfect handbook for controlling masses.

GladOS tried to trick the player to kill themselves by promising them cake. The humour is that there's someone else whom she tried to trick the same way and this previous guy got so offended by the lack of cake that he wastes precious energy to write it down while fleeing for his life.
