10 Gems for the first upgrade. Kill the spiders ASAP, they will take gems from the arena.
Also if you stop firing gems will draw to you, if you shotgun they will be blown away from you.

by the time you get to the spider you should have 8 gems (unless you farmed) and after you kill the spider and then skull mk 2 you should get the first upgrade
you should prioritize spiders and skulls mk2 over just about everything else as spiders suck up gems (replacing them with enemies) and skulls mk 2 ( the ones that come from nests with two gems on them) are a lot more aggressive

Hm, well that matches what I was led to believe by the game. Maybe I'm just not killing as many spawners and horned skulls as I think I am. Still, my best run was 91 seconds and even in that time (modest as it is) not one power up. I dunno, just need to git gud I guess.

You either let gems disapear by not getting them early or the spider eats some of your gems, you should be able to get the first powerup before 50 seconds, if you don't get the powerup then 50-110 seconds will be hard to survive but with it it should be rather easy

To say the game has no level design proves you haven't played it. Enemies spawn at guaranteed times and amounts. You can get upgrades at exactly the same time each time. If that isn't level progression nothing is.
