It's SMT: Digimon Survivor, dialogue is to be expected. It's generally not horribly cringeworthly which is a plus and they don't even attempt to American-ify it which is appreciated.
Comparing it to Pokemon is obvious, but this is a JRPG foremost (again SMT: Digimon Survivor) with Digimon, closest real Pokemon comparisons are the Gamecube Pokemon games.
Probably, I played the vita version and thought it looked fine for a vita game, but that's obviously not gonna fly for PS4.

Pokemon does tend to have some plot with an evil team per game and Cyber Sleuths story makes about as much sense as team aqua flooding the world with rain so tomato tomato.

Plenty of basic spelling/grammar errors, some of the digiline quizzes are mistranslated and so have the wrong answer as the right answer, in several places npcs refer to the "eaters" as "bakemon" and in other places as "eaters". Though maybe they've patched this now or something.

The game certainly has it's flaws, but I wouldn't consider it mediocre. I find it's a pretty good game and it really has a mixture of mechanics that work together. I've only played it on the PS4, so I can only speak for that, but it doesn't look terrible and it has non-existent load times, which is fantastic.
If you're for looking for a JRPG that's interesting and at times challenging, it'll scratch that itch even if you're not all that into Digimon or if it's your first game.
