NEVER do this. You will only be disappointed.
Also, don't ever get the "Complete" mods. They aren't true to the STALKER experience.
Your first run should be the vanilla game (maybe with visual mods only) on Master difficulty. It increases the damage your enemies can do but it also increases your damage. The "normal" difficulty is full of bullet sponges.
It should be pretty obvious where to go after you talk to the merchant guy at the beginning. Use your map.

I wouldn't call CoP the best, except it has the best, most polished mechanics in the series.
Each game in the series is similar, yet so different that it's hard to call the best one. Though a choice is between SoC and CoP.

Download the unofficial patch, I think it's on moddb or some shit. I'd say the bugs are kind of part of the experience, at least when playing it for the first time, but sometimes they can be gamebreaking. The most you'll miss out on by patching is some unintentional hilarity due to bugs. If you end up really liking SoC after finishing it, play patched CS and then enjoy the perfection of CoP.

CoP is the most pacific STALKER. There are barely any enemies other than mutants, zombies and Monolith. The Zone is almost too friendly, but it's a nice STALKER life simulator.
SoC had more and overall better shooting part, as well more memorable moment and top notch atmosphere.

I agree that SoC had a lot of fun moments shooting bandits and shit. CoP had me shitting my pants though since it made giant mutants like the chimeras more prominent. Keep in mind that even though CoP is my favorite I think they're nearly equal in quality for different reasons.

STALKER already have quite enough number and variations of weapons, enemies and levels, I'm not sure what do you need more?
STALKER SoC has one of the best no leveling progression in games.
