You're right, I wouldn't consider Sonic and the Black Knight part of the main series because it's made by a side team, plays totally differently from the mainline Sonic games, and is, in fact, literally listed as being part of a side "Sonic Storybook" series.
Both Mario 3D Land and World were made by the same team that made Galaxy though, have similar game design philosophies, and are officially considered continuations of the Mainline Mario series.

Are you really comparing Sonic and The Black Knight to 3D Land and World? Black Knight was part of the canceled story book trilogy. The mainline Sonic games are 1, 2, 3 and Knuckles, and 4. Even though 4 was considered bad by some, it's part of the mainline games. Now you may not like 3D Land and World, but they are apart of the vague 3D Mario mainline series. I say vague since I don't think it's explicitly stated somewhere that 3D Mario games are a set series. The only thing that ties them together is that they are 3D platforming Mario games that are usually the first for the system they are on. 3D Land and World fall into that category.
